- Joop van den Ende and John de Mol found the Hilversum ( Netherlands ) based international television production company Endemol .
- On behalf of ARD , the German Broadcasting Archive is awarding the “DRA grant” for the first time, a sponsorship award for research into the radio and media history of the GDR.
- September - The New Pop Festival initiated by SWR takes place for the first time.
- October 17th - The board of trustees of the ORF elects the former RTL manager Gerhard Zeiler by means of a two-thirds majority to succeed Gerd Bacher as ORF general manager.
- November 28th - Jörg Grabosch, Martin Keß and Ralf Günter found the TV production company Brainpool in Cologne .
Radio
- In France, the radio quota decided by the conservative Balladur cabinet comes into force. The law, largely suggested by Justice Minister Jacques Toubon, provides for a quota of at least 40 percent of French interpreters on the radio.
- As part of the NRJ telecast Klub Ma: d the comedy duo's first time Erkan & Stefan heard.
- The book Das Hörspiel in der DDR by Sibylle Bolik is the first independent study on radio art in the GDR.
- January 1st - The national radio broadcaster Deutschlandradio starts operations with two programs. The two former broadcasters RIAS 1 ( West Berlin ) and Deutschlandsender Kultur ( East Berlin ) are included in the cultural program DLR Berlin (now Deutschlandradio Kultur ) . The information program comes from Deutschlandfunk in Cologne.
- January 1st - The SFB4 Multi Kulti radio station , which belongs to the SFB, goes on air for the first time in Berlin .
- April 4th - The NDR starts its 5th radio program under the name N-Joy .
- July 15 - AFN Berlin says goodbye with a 3-hour special broadcast that will be broadcast in 54 countries.
- July 31 - Radio Volga , the Russian Armed Forces broadcaster in Germany, ceases operations.

- December 6th - Werner Veigel speaks his last 8pm daily news . He has to stop working after a brain tumor diagnosis. He is still chief spokesman until January. Then he is replaced by Dagmar Berghoff .
- December 24th - The cable channel is renamed Kabel 1 . The transmitter prepares itself for the free satellite broadcast.
- December 26th - Start of the ZDF series gynecologist Dr. Markus Merthin with Sascha Hehn in the lead role.
- December 27th - The First German Television broadcasts the first episode of the WDR- produced cooking program alfredissimo! .
Died
- January 22 - Telly Savalas , American actor and serial actor of Greek descent, dies in California the day after his 72nd birthday. Savalas became popular with international television audiences primarily in the role of Lt. Theo Kojak in the crime series Kojak - Einsatz in Manhattan known.
- February 11 - William Conrad , American actor ( Smoking Colts ), voice actor and radio broadcaster, dies in Los Angeles at the age of 73 .
- March 19 - Bobby Lugano , Austrian entertainer and television magician, dies in Vienna at the age of 76 .
- September 8th - Barry Graves , German journalist, author and radio presenter ( night club on Radio Fritz ) dies at the age of 52 in Berlin .
- October 1st - Arminio Rothstein , Austrian academic painter, puppeteer and puppet maker, known to the Austrian television audience especially from the children's series Tobi and Tobias in the role of the clown Habakuk , dies in Vienna at the age of 67.
- November 30 - Lionel Stander , American serial actor, dies in Los Angeles at the age of 86. Stander became known to a wide audience in the role of the butler Max in the action series Hart .
