General
- With the TV-8-301, Sony brings the first portable transistor television onto the market.
 - July 5th - Renaming of the previous “Swiss Broadcasting Company” to “ Swiss Radio and Television Company ” (SRG).
 - July 25th - Deutschland-Fernsehen GmbH is founded. This should result in a second program under the supervision of the federal government. The Federal Constitutional Court prohibited in his judgment this project.

 - June 25 - After seven years of running, ORF broadcasts the 351st and final episode of the radio soap Die Radiofamilie Floriani . The series was initially broadcast on the American occupation channel Rot-Weiß-Rot and was intended to depict the everyday life of a middle-class Viennese family.
 - August 27 - Shreveport , Louisiana airs the final edition of the 1948 Louisiana Hayride country music show . In the course of the program's history, live performances by stars such as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash could be heard.
 - October 1 - The German soldier broadcaster 935 , created by the GDR as a secret broadcaster , goes into operation. He is supposed to influence the soldiers of the Bundeswehr ideologically.
 - November 25 - After 27 years of broadcasting and a total of 7,065 episodes, Ma Perkins , one of the longest running US radio soaps, is discontinued.

 - March 21 - GDR television broadcasts the first of a total of 1,519 episodes of the propaganda series The Black Channel . Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler shows excerpts from West German television programs and comments on them according to the ideological principles of the SED .
 - March 22 to May 17 - German television broadcasts for the first time the five-part television film Am Green Beach on the Spree, produced by the NWRV , based on the book of the same name by Hans Scholz .  - June 29 - The BBC opens its new headquarters in West London with the Television Center.

 - September 26th - The two applicants for the successor to Eisenhower , John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon face each other in the first major television duel in radio history. This shows the power of the still young medium: especially the youthful and optimistic looking Kennedy can score more with the audience than the factually well prepared, but badly shaved, sweating and visually hardly appealing Nixon.
 - September 30th - The animated series Flintstones premieres on US television.
 - October 21 to November 7 - The second Durbridge six-part series is running on German television It's time . The crime thriller, created under director Hans Quest , achieved an audience rating of 80 percent.
 - December 9th - The BBC airs the first episode of the television series Coronation Street .

 - July 28th - Harald Lesch , German astrophysicist, science journalist and television presenter ( alpha-Centauri ) is born in Giessen .
 - Aug 7 - David Duchovny , American actor ( Fox Mulder in The X-Files - The FBI's Creepy Cases , 1993–2002 and Hank Moody in Californication , since 2007) was born in New York City .
 - September 10th - Harald Krassnitzer , Austrian actor ( Commissioner Moritz Eisner in Tatort since 1999) is born in Salzburg .
 - November 2nd - Andy Borg , Austrian pop singer and presenter ( Musikantenstadl ) is born in Vienna .
 - November 5th - Martin Blumenau , Austrian radio presenter and music journalist, is born in Vienna .
 - November 7th - Daniel Boemle , Swiss radio presenter at DRS 3 and DJ , was born in Bern († 2007).
 
Died
- August 9th - Marie Ulfers , German writer and radio play author, dies in Aurich at the age of 71 . She wrote works in both High German and Low German .
