- January 17th - The stage magician Uri Geller caused a sensation with his "spoon trick" performed in the ZDF show Drei Mal Neun , in which he allegedly bends cutlery solely through the power of thought . - April 6th - The Swedish group ABBA wins the 19th Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton, England, with the title Waterloo . The single becomes a surprising sales success in Europe and the USA. With other titles suitable for the masses such as SOS (1975), Fernando (1976) and, above all, Dancing Queen (1976), the four Swedes quickly achieved a breakthrough to a world career, which continued unbroken until the band split up in 1982.

- October 30th - In an edition of the talk show The Later the Evening hosted by Dietmar Schönherr (next to boxer Bubi Scholz and actor Burkhard Driest ) Romy Schneider is a guest, who at that time is mainly making films in France. - March 15 - Paul Grupp , German cameraman, dies in Munich at the age of 69 . He shot the television series Alarm in den Berge (ZDF, 1965)
- June 4th - Ernst Nebhut , German writer, librettist and screenwriter dies at the age of 75 in Frankfurt am Main . He wrote scripts for television films and radio plays, among other things.
- October 13 - Edward Vincent Sullivan , American entertainer known as "Ed Sullivan" dies in New York City at the age of 73 . Sullivan hosted the Ed Sullivan Show on television from 1948 to 1974 , which gave many rock musicians their first appearance in front of a wide audience.
- December 26th - Jack Benny , American vaudeville artist , entertainer and actor dies in Beverly Hills at the age of 80. Benny is one of the leading entertainers in the USA in the 20th century, during the 1940s and 1950s he had a significant influence on the development of the sitcom genre .
