1979: The Sony TPS-L2, the world's first Walkman , is launched

  • In Greece is color television introduced initially by the French SECAM method. In the 1990s there was a change to the German PAL system.
  • The US electronics manufacturer Atari is launching the Atari 400, its first home computer .

  • January 29th - René Deltgen , Luxembourg actor dies at the age of 69 in Cologne . In addition to his numerous film and television roles, he was best known for the title role in the multi-part radio drama about the English detective Paul Temple by Francis Durbridge .
  • February 21 - Leopold Hainisch , Austrian actor and director dies at the age of 87 in Hamburg. From 1937 to 1939 Hainisch was senior director of the television station Paul Nipkow .
