- January 1 - The previous Northwest German Broadcasting Corporation (NWDR) splits into the two state broadcasting corporations Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), responsible for the states of Hamburg , Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein , based in Hamburg, and Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), responsible for North Rhine-Westphalia based in Cologne . The North and West German Broadcasting Association will take over the television operations of the NWDR .
 - February - The Nalepastraße radio house in Berlin-Oberschöneweide , the headquarters of the GDR radio , goes into full operation.
 - April 14 - At the National Association of Broadcasters in Chicago , the company Ampex the first for-sale video recorder from the world.
