- Sony introduces the Video 8 standard. The cassettes, which are about the size of a Philips compact cassette , occupied the largest market segment among the amateur film formats until they were replaced by digital formats around the turn of the millennium . In addition to being used in cameras, stand-alone devices are built, which are rarely used, for which recorded cassettes were also offered until the end of the 1980s.
- The organization Reporters without Frontiers ( Reporters sans frontièrs ) is founded in Montpellier , France . The aim is to stand up for press freedom and against censorship worldwide .
- The American media scholar Neil Postman published his study Amusing Ourselves to Death ( Amusing Ourselves To Death ) where he represents the main thesis that the advent of television, the critical judgment of the public to the letterpress era have weakened considerably.
- January 1st - Foundation of GfK GmbH for audience research.
- June 17th - John Hendricks creates the Discovery Channel . The broadcaster, which specializes in travel documents, will soon reach more than 30 million subscribers in the US when fed into local cable networks.
- July 23rd - The American computer manufacturer Commodore presents the first computer of the Amiga series. His graphics and multimedia services are particularly valued.

- March 24th - ÖR , the shell program of the federal state programs of the ORF , broadcasts the 10,000. Edition of the lunchtime magazine Motorists on the move . The show has been on the program since 1957.
- March 28 - A Roger Waters concert broadcast live from New York's Radio City Music Hall uses the principle of holophony for the first time in broadcasting history .
- October 7th - The BR broadcasts the first episode of the computer magazine Bit, byte, bitten . It is the first computer magazine on German-speaking radio.

- January 7th - The first edition of the children's news program Mini-ZiB can be seen on FS1 , ORF's first TV channel .

- June 3 - The first episode of the daily talk show Larry King Live , hosted by Larry King , is broadcast on CNN .
