Charita Bauer (born December 20, 1922 in Newark , New Jersey , † February 28, 1985 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress . She became known as Bertha "Bert" Bauer in the soap opera Springfield Story .

Life

Bauer worked on Broadway from 1933 to 1944 before starring on American television, first in the series The Aldrich Family from 1949 to 1950 , and in the Springfield Story from 1952 until her death . She had played this role on the radio before. She also gave a cameo as Bert Bauer in her only feature film, Satan in Weiss from 1983 .

All personal strokes of fate also flowed into the role. When Bauer developed abdominal cancer in 1960 and had to undergo treatment, Bert was also fighting the cancer. Shortly before her death, her leg was amputated due to a diabetes disease and this time, too, this disease and its consequences were incorporated into the series, so that she could continue to play her role Bert in a wheelchair. When Bauer's health deteriorated so much in 1984 that she could no longer appear in front of the camera, her part Bert was sent on a long visit to her sister.

Even when Bauer died in 1985, Bert Bauer - this time spoken by a different actress - lived on the Springfield Story phone . It wasn't until a year later that the producers also let Bert die and honored Bauer with an episode that consisted of flashbacks to almost 40 years of acting in the series.
