Nachtgedanken was a broadcast by the Hessischer Rundfunk and was broadcast on the first at the end of the broadcast. (The program was canceled on days when the first was showing a television program around the clock, e.g. during the live broadcasts of the 1988 Olympic Games.)

The idea for this came from Kurt Rittig (then SWF ): "At midnight, the viewer shouldn't be bid farewell with the last terrible news, but should be able to take a few good thoughts with them to bed."

The broadcast was entitled to the poem Nachtgedanken by Heinrich Heine from 1844. The sequence was always the same: After a few bars of Frédéric Chopin's piano piece Nocturne Op.9 No. 2 , the reciter Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff opened a notebook and named it Title and author of a text, which he then read out to then wish the audience a "good night".

The format was not restricted to a specific genre or a specific era. The spectrum ranged from Solomon and Seneca to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich Schiller and Immanuel Kant to Erich Kästner , Christian Morgenstern and Joachim Ringelnatz . Thus it covered a spectrum of 4000 years of literary history. Psychology also found its place: As part of the long Kulenkampff evening , on May 20, 2004, the hr television repeated the night thoughts with About the Noise by Carl Gustav Jung .

The texts v. a. by Jürgen Lehmann, Kurt Rittig and von Kulenkampff himself.

Between 1985 and 1990 almost 2000 episodes of the series were shown. After Kulenkampff switched to RTL plus , she was discontinued.

Under the title Exlibris , a similar series was shown on ORF in the late 1980s before the broadcast closed .

In 2013, comedian Oliver Kalkofe took up the format to read irrelevant, superfluous passages from the biographies of stars and starlets of our time under the title Not thought.
