Children's news are a radio or television program for children and adolescents , the format of the news program corresponds to, but is specifically tailored to the needs of young people.

“Access to information” is a fundamental right ( right to information ) according to Article 17 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Children . Surveys on children show that information about daily events that they voluntarily or involuntarily notice and their background are of great importance. There is also the need to have these explained and to understand them - and also the demand that adults, following their rights, explain it to them. After excitement and fun, knowledge acquisition is the main motivation for young people to watch television. According to a study by ARD and ZDF in 2003, 80% (eight out of ten) of 6 to 13-year-olds expect "to get things explained by television that they don't yet know", and two thirds would like to find out through television "What else is going on in the world".

A special analysis by the Society for Consumer Research (GfK) from 1987 showed that the audience participation of 8 to 13-year-olds was between 3% and 4% in the afternoon news broadcasts (ARD, ZDF); News at 7% (on average every fifteenth viewer was under 13). This medium of processing information, designed for adults, is likely to confuse primary school as well as older children without introductory and further explanations adapted to their level of knowledge more than enlighten them, and increasingly lead them to no longer watch the news broadcasts at all. Primarily market and entertainment-oriented broadcast formats such as infotainments and even reality TV presumably miss the information needs of children.

Concept and format

The main problems in news production for children are:

  • “The transferability or non-transferability of criteria that are mandatory for adult news programs (objectivity, completeness, timeliness) to news programs for children;
  • the relationship between factual delivery and guiding-orientated awareness building;
  • the possible range of topics and content that can (and must) be offered to children;
  • the formal features of the program, which determine the format, visual and verbal language and the type of presentation of the offer;
  • the possibility of letting the children not only assume the status of consumers, but also of producers, by integrating them into program design and implementation;
  • the financial and human resources as well as the integration into the (news) organizational context of the respective institution. "

Curiosity and interest in - natural and technical - the environment and fellow human beings are a matter of course in the adolescence phase. Today the prevailing opinion in media research and related child psychology is that “difficult, not child-friendly” topics should not only not be avoided, but must be the central content of a knowledge program for children. Children not only deal with issues such as disasters, wars and crimes, and coming problems in society and the environment, they also notice that these issues affect their older and adult caregivers. The priority is to neither belittle these in language and presentation nor to portray them excessively distant. Even more than adults, children need to relate their world of experience to themselves, and to shape and measure their own role model against their knowledge.

According to Susanne Müller, the former chief editor of the ZDF children's news program logo! , adequacy and mutual respect is the basis of the editorial work:

“This adoring, a manifestation of childish drama, is one of the worst for a program like logo. Having a child means not taking children seriously - and because the children notice that, they do not take such a program seriously. "

Examples

Examples of a children's news program in Germany include logo! of ZDF broadcasts nine and a half in the first , Minitz (SWR) and Arte Journal Junior . In Austria, the Mini-ZiB is generally considered to be the first Austrian news program for children, although news for preschool children was already available before 1985 by the editorial staff of Am dam des .
