General
- The GDR is built as a central state on the Soviet model . The previous state structures fell victim to the administrative reform of 1952 , and with it the state broadcasters that existed in the GDR and went back to the time before the Second World War. The broadcasting chains of the Berliner Rundfunk and the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk are dissolved and reorganized as part of the GDR radio .
- August - In the USA , publishers Harvey Kurtzman and William Maxwell Gaines found the satirical magazine Mad . The later mascot of the magazine, Alfred E. Neumann , who always grins with a tooth gap , does not appear on the cover of Mad until around three years later, in March 1955, with his motto What me worry (German: Na And? ) .
- September 15 - Foundation of the State Committee for Broadcasting in the Soviet Sector of Berlin. This means that control over the electronic media in the GDR is placed directly under the SED .
Radio
- For the first time the radio play award of the war blind is awarded.
- April 24th - Radio Vienna and Rot-Weiß-Rot report with live reports about the transfer of the newly cast Pummerin , the largest bell of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna . Its predecessor from the beginning of the 18th century fell victim to the fire in St. Stephen's Cathedral during the Battle of Vienna in 1945.
- June 21st - The radio house Wallrafplatz , the headquarters of the later WDR , opens not far from the cathedral in Cologne .
- June 27 - After 19 years of running, the US radio soap opera The Guiding Light is discontinued.
- October 4th - the Saarländischer Rundfunk regular VHF broadcasts
- October 24th - As a result of the first broadcasting law of the Saarland , the Saarländischen Rundfunk GmbH was founded.
- November 30th - Start of the 1st season of the radio play series produced by the NWDR Hamburg under the direction of Hans Gertberg Permit, my name is Cox by Rolf Becker , with Carl-Heinz Schroth in the title role.
- December 30th - The NWDR broadcasts the radio play version of Heinrich Böll's satire Not only at Christmas time .

- As part of the election campaign for Truman's successor , the first political commercials are placed on television in the USA .
- February 15th - The BBC broadcasts the funeral of King George VI .
- Feb. 18 - The fourth Emmy -Awards will be the best entertainment show Your Show of Shows the television station NBC excellent, the prize for best entertainer goes to Red Skelton .
- June 30 - On CBS is the first episode of Guiding Light to see.
- September - The first episode of the American Bandstand music show appears on US television .
- September 6th - The French-speaking Télévision de Radio-Canada goes into operation in Montreal and officially ushers in the television age in Canada .
- September 8 - With CBLT in Toronto , Canada's second English-language television station goes on air.
- September 12th - The topping-out ceremony for one of the broadest-reaching television stations takes place at the Langenberg station.
- December 21st - On the occasion of the 74th birthday of Josef Stalin , the television of the GDR officially goes into operation. Part of the first day of broadcast is the first issue of the news program Current Camera .
- December 25th - Official television start in West Germany : the Northwest German Broadcasting Corporation starts regular operations at 8 p.m. under the name NWDR-Fernsehen . It is initially broadcast from the flak tower on the Heiligengeistfeld in Hamburg.
- December 26th - The NWDR television broadcasts the first edition of the Tagesschau .
