- August - The Dutch electronics company Philips presents the Compact Cassette at the Berlin radio exhibition . In the course of the 1970s, the new sound carrier was able to establish itself as an inexpensive alternative to the difficult-to-use tapes , which remained standard in the professional sector until the introduction of digital sound technology.
- November 1st - After three years of construction, the Arecibo Observatory , at that time the world's largest radio telescope (until 1974) with a diameter of 304.8 meters, is put into operation on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico .
- November 22 - Radio and television stations around the world interrupt their programs to hear about the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy . The ORF interrupts a radio play, ABC radio the song Hooray for Hollywood, interpreted by Doris Day .
- December 14th - In Paris , in the presence of President Charles de Gaulle and Minister of Culture André Malraux, the radio building known today as the “ Maison de Radio France ” is officially opened.

- January - Broadcasting in the GDR sets up its own feature department.
- January 1st - DR P3 , the third radio program of the public service Danmarks Radio goes on air. It is aimed primarily at young listeners and therefore mainly broadcasts pop music. The creation of P3 is in response to the shutdown of the offshore radio station Radio Mercur , whose activity was criminalized by a law passed by the Danish Parliament in 1962.

- January 3rd - German television pioneer Walter Bruch introduces the PAL color television system.
- January 14th to 25th - The six-part television film Tim Frazer by Francis Durbridge , produced by WDR in 1962 , puts the Federal Republic of Germany into a real state of emergency , similar to the year before with the classic Das Halstuch . The street sweeper achieved ratings of up to 93%.
- March - The radio diffusion Télévision Marocaine (RTM) broadcasts the first regular television programs in Morocco .
- March 8th - The 18-minute sketch The 90th Birthday or Dinner for One can be seen for the first time on NDR .
- April 1st - ZDF starts operations at 7.30 p.m. (closing time: 10 p.m.). The program will open with addresses by ZDF director Karl Holzamer , the first edition of the news program today (with Carl Weiss) and a speech by the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg , Kurt Georg Kiesinger .
- April 10th - The first edition of the talk series On Person can be seen on ZDF. The interviews conducted by Günter Gaus are style-defining.
- April 5th - German television broadcasts the first edition of the international magazine Weltspiegel .
- August 24th - ZDF includes the current sport studio in its program.
- October 5th - The BBC shows the first episode of The Telegoons , a television adaptation of the hit radio comedy The Goon Show .
- November 24 - Lee Harvey Oswald , suspected by police as a Kennedy assassin, is shot dead by nightclub owner Jack Ruby in front of running cameras while he is being transferred from police custody to Dallas State Prison . It is the first known murder to be televised live.
