Radio Mercur was Denmark's first commercial radio broadcaster . It operated from August 2, 1958 to July 31, 1962.

history

Radio Mercur was broadcast from international waters between Denmark and Sweden from the ship MS Cheeta . The transmitter was operated by Peer Jansen and Ib Fogh. Radio Mercur broadcast music, news, radio plays and advertising on ultrashort waves . The broadcasts could be heard in large parts of the country with the help of a second broadcasting boat between Funen and Zealand.

The Danish Parliament passed a law against unlicensed radio stations ("Lex Mercur") in 1962. The now illegal broadcasting had to be stopped two weeks later.
