Funkhaus Nalepastraße : Two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the former GDR radio stops its programs

General

  • In Austria , the Teletest study is being introduced to determine television viewing rates .
  • May - The Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony introduces the MiniDisc (MD). The new digital audio format, which initially offers a recording time of up to 80 minutes, is to succeed the Philips compact cassette first introduced in 1963 . In the first few years, pre-recorded MiniDiscs also came onto the market. The MZ-1 is the first MiniDisc recorder to appear on the European market a year later. Like the Walkman 13 years earlier, it is a portable device and has two special features that are interesting in terms of technology history: It is possible to make digital copies of a compact disc or a mini disc via a digital (optical) output. However, the built-in SCMS mechanism prevents further digital (i.e. lossless) copies of copies. This is one of the earliest applications of digital rights management (after the dispute over digital audio tape ) . On the other hand, the ATRAC code with which the MiniDiscs are written, around ten years before the widespread use of the MP3 file format, is the first audio data compression method that is accessible to a broader segment of consumers.
  • May 31 - The Central German Broadcasting Corporation (MDR) is founded as a three-country station for the federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
  • October 12th - Foundation of the Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg (ORB).
  • December 31st - The Funkhaus Berlin (FU), formerly " Rundfunk der DDR ", and the German TV broadcaster (DFF), formerly "Fernsehen der DDR", cease broadcasting in accordance with Article 36 of the Unification Treaty. With this step, the transfer of the state radio and television programs of the GDR into the dual broadcasting system of the Federal Republic is completed.
