S4 Baden-Württemberg was the fourth joint radio program of Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) and Südwestfunk (SWF) for Baden-Württemberg . It existed from January 1, 1991 to August 30, 1998, its successor is called SWR4 Baden-Württemberg .

For Rhineland-Palatinate, Südwestfunk organized its own fourth program with SWF4 Rhineland-Palatinate . Although it was musically aligned in the same way, the proportion of words was significantly higher than in S4 Baden-Württemberg. SWF4 hosted its own program daily from 5 a.m. to midnight and was continued under the name SWR4 Rhineland-Palatinate after the channel merger . Since then, the cooperation with the sister program SWR4 Baden-Württemberg has also been expanded (joint broadcasting lines during the evening hours and on Sunday mornings).

The nucleus of the station was the SDR 4, created at the end of the 1980s, which initially served as a cover program for the regional windows of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk that still exist today (until 1984 the Kurpfalz-Radio 91.5, Radio Stuttgart 87.85 and the Ulm Schwabenradio 96, 9 / 92.6 MHz).

By § 13 of the country's media law Baden-Württemberg of 16 December 1985 new regional public programs should be excluded to SDR and SWF while using constitutional complaint turned and inhaled by. 5. Broadcasting decision of the Federal Constitutional Court of 24 March were 1,987 law. This was followed by the creation of Frankenradio and Badenradio at SDR .

With the inclusion of the Freiburg regional window Radio Breisgau operated by Südwestfunk within SWF1 , a nationwide, continuously broadcast radio program was created. Gradually, additional regional offers were added in the SWF broadcasting area, and in the Stuttgart / Tübingen area, SDR and SWF even produced a joint regional program with Württemberg Radio .

Last but not least, S4 was also politically wanted: the creation of the joint program made it possible to avert the merger of SDR and SWF , which was repeatedly demanded at the beginning of the 1990s. However, it was precisely the joint projects of both ARD broadcasters ( S2 Kultur and S4 Baden-Württemberg) that ultimately led to the merger.

The musical color of S4 Baden-Württemberg hardly differed from the successor program: it was very melodic / hit-heavy. The broadcast was alternating daily (at 1 p.m. the “predetermined breaking point” was) from Stuttgart and Baden-Baden. However, the lack of central responsibility was also a reason why the word share in the S4 program was significantly lower than in the successor SWR4 Baden-Württemberg, for which some new information formats were introduced. Most of the music broadcasts (Notenexpress, Schlagerkarussell, music cocktail or desired melody) continued to exist on SWR4.

The regional program offering at S4 Baden-Württemberg was still being set up. Some regional windows existed before 1991, especially in the SDR broadcast area. With Radio Breisgau , the SWF already had something to offer. There were other music programs for the areas without a regional program.

The SWF in particular used the introduction of S4 Baden-Württemberg to position its first program more clearly as a pop and oldie wave. German hits and popular music programs (hit parade from Mainz, popular hit parade from Tübingen) quickly migrated to the fourth program. At SDR 1 , the music color remained heterogeneous, it ranged from hits to light pop music.
