SDR 1 , Südfunk 1, was from March 4, 1948 until the merger of SDR and SWF to form SWR on August 30, 1998, the first radio program of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk. The transmitter was based in Stuttgart. The coverage area was northern Baden-Württemberg within the boundaries of the state of Württemberg-Baden, which existed until 1952 . In the 1980s it appeared with the slogan “The Heart of the South”. Occasionally it was also called “ Radio Stuttgart Presents”.

SDR 1 was the main information program of the SDR. Instead of a fully formatted program, SDR 1 offered many special interest programs and a high proportion of words. An example of this was the show Today in Conversation at 7:20 pm. Das Journal am Morgen " developed from a program for women and stuck to ten minutes of words, which had become a rarity in other ARD main programs (" Wellen ") in the 1980s, as did the 15-minute background programs at 22 : 3 pm The show Ruf Heidelberg 2 71 67 (later Ruf Mannheim 418 000 ) of the science editorial office from Heidelberg on Thursday evening showed astonishing depth for a mass medium , which tried to present scientific answers to questions from the audience in a generally understandable way.

Up until the early 1980s there were the classic big entertainment programs on Saturday afternoon, live and with an audience. For Südfunk 1 they often came "from the large broadcasting hall of Villa Berg ". Typical Swabian representatives of subtle dialect humor were Häberle and Pfleiderer , Willy Reichert and Oscar Heiler. Various series of quiz programs that were broadcast jointly with the RIAS were created and presented by Hans Rosenthal ( Alone Against All ) . Erwin Lehn and the Südfunk-Tanzorchester framed the program on numerous occasions .

The music program ranged from hits and evergreens to light pop music. In the first years almost only German-language productions from the operetta genre and music from Peter Alexander to Udo Jürgens to Heino dominated the field. The prisoner's choir from Nabucco was always ready to hand at the request concert ; it was by far the most requested. Since the start of broadcasting the 4th radio program, folk music has found its home there, and ABBA , Frank Sinatra and some more rocking interpreters made English the “main musical language”. When it came to entertainment, there was also a “lightning rod” in the niche program , with Axel Naumer .
