Alone against everyone

Alone Against All was the title of an entertainment program on ARD radio that was broadcast from 1963 to 1977.

procedure

In the game moderated by Hans Rosenthal and broadcast live , one listener competed against an entire city. The single player initially asked five difficult questions to a city with up to 25,000 inhabitants. The city had the opportunity to attempt three replies within the fifteen-minute guessing time. By May 10, 1975, three arbitrators decided the correctness of the answer by showing thumbs up or, if the answer was wrong, down. From June 7, 1975, acoustic signals were used instead of the thumbs. If you answered correctly you heard a gong three times, if you answered the wrong answer you heard three birds chirping. If all the questions were not answered by the time the time ran out, Rosenthal repeated the questions for which the city had another attempt. If the city gave the correct answer, it received one point. If the last attempt was wrong, the candidate received one point. If the candidate just lost 2: 3, he was able to equalize with the help of an estimation question and achieve a draw .

If the candidate was able to win the “brains' quiz fight” or was able to equalize after the estimation question, he was allowed to ask five more questions to a city with up to 100,000 inhabitants in the following broadcast. Then a big city followed and finally a state capital or metropolis. However, only a few players have successfully overcome these four hurdles: 13 of the 269 questioners in 161 programs were successful and were named "Manneken Quiz" or "Mannequin Quiz". The candidates almost always received a gift from the city, which could range from a small gift to an invitation for a visit for two people over several days.

On the other hand, a total of 207 towns and cities took part, 70 (43 small towns / 18 medium-sized towns / 7 large towns / 2 state capitals) of which were successful; After three victorious participations they received the title “Unbeatable Puzzle City”. Some of the less well-known locations nationwide, such as Brilon or Radevormwald , received national attention through media coverage such as program magazines. The city was also presented by its representative (often the mayor ) at the beginning of the program , which sometimes resembled an advertising contribution. In addition to the actual guessing competition, the game master Hans Rosenthal gave the city an additional task, which consisted of a funny special game - usually played on the market square or town hall forecourt. Here, the citizens of the respective places involved had to prove that they also had a sense of humor and the joy of playing in order to make their city a special point. So there was often the opportunity to sing songs, compete in sports or recite poems. In an early broadcast in the 1960s, a women's soccer game was even played. Similar special games were featured in the ZDF television show Wetten, dass ...? as so. City bet taken over.

Charisma

The game idea for this radio quiz originally came from Jean-Paul Blondeau . The quiz show also ran on the radio stations of Belgium and France in the early 1960s, but not so successfully, so that it was canceled after a few episodes. The NDR entertainment director Henri Regnier acquired the game idea and submitted it to Hans Rosenthal, who eventually invented a new concept and new games.

“Alone against all” on August 30, 1969 from Kiel City Hall

In Germany, the first broadcast was broadcast on January 24, 1963 from Studio 10 of NDR Hamburg (today: Rolf-Liebermann-Saal ) as a co-production between Norddeutscher Rundfunk and RIAS Berlin . Over the years, new co-producing broadcasters were added (Süddeutscher Rundfunk Stuttgart, Südwestfunk Baden-Baden, Saarländischer Rundfunk Saarbrücken, Hessischer Rundfunk Frankfurt and Westdeutscher Rundfunk Cologne), so that the program could be heard almost everywhere in the whole of Germany. From May 9, 1964, the Swiss telephone announcement was always included. In the beginning the broadcast time was 90 minutes; later the broadcast was extended to two hours. The events took place in front of an audience in a hall or hall. Rosenthal was with alone against all in Berlin following German cities to host: Hamburg , Peine , Holzminden , Frankfurt am Main , Travemünde , Flensburg , Kiel , Hannover , Cologne , Stuttgart , Baden-Baden , Freiburg , Saarbrücken and Mannheim . The last episode of Alone Against All (161st program) was broadcast from Stuttgart ( Villa Berg ) on December 17, 1977 . The participants in each program included artists from film, stage, radio and television, as well as the respective dance orchestra of the broadcasting corporation acting as the headquarters, who could each give their musical calling cards. The following conductors were primarily involved: Alfred Haus and Franz Thon (NDR); Werner Müller , Helmuth Brandenburg , Horst Jankowski and Heinrich Riethmüller (RIAS Berlin); Willy Berking (HR); Werner Müller (WDR); Erwin Lehn and Willy Matthes (SDR); Rolf-Hans Müller (SWF); Eberhard Pokorny (SR). The long-time NDR employee Kip Oppermann, who also oversaw many other Hans Rosenthal radio series, acted as head of production for this series.

Adaptations

The ARD tried to transfer the format to television and brought a broadcast of the same title from 1978 (1st episode: March 18, 1978) to 1980 (17th episode: September 13, 1980) in its first program, in the first year even as a Eurovision broadcast with the participation of Austrian (ORF) and Swiss television (SRG). The first four episodes were moderated by the actor and director Wolfgang Spier ; afterwards the moderation took over Max Schautzer , who was able to make the show a success after some initial difficulties. It was ultimately due to the disagreement between the individual co-producing ARD broadcasters that the intellectual entertainment program was finally discontinued.

From October 2007 to September 2013, the broadcast on Deutschlandradio Kultur was repeated on Sunday morning (initially weekly, since October 2009 every four weeks) in an edited, shortened version commented on by Olaf Kosert and Claus Bredel as part of the series “From the Archives”.

Since 1975 there has been a circle of friends of the former questioners of “Alone Against All”, which meets once a year mainly in Baden-Württemberg, but also in Franconia and Berlin. The more than 40-year friendship of former radio quiz candidates should be unique in Germany.

On June 15, 2019, in the Fernwehpark in Oberkotzau near Hof (Saale), a sign was put up to commemorate the radio show Alone Against All and Hans Rosenthal by the questioners on the occasion of the annual meeting.

various

In the 100th broadcast, the city of Flensburg became the “Unbeatable city of riddles”.

The city of Herzberg am Harz was given a second chance in February 1970 due to an eight-minute transmission failure during the broadcast on November 15, 1969 .
