General

  • Start of color television in several countries.
    • In Austria , color television will be officially inaugurated according to the PAL system from January 1st . The first color broadcast in Austria is the traditional New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic .
    • In the GDR , DFF 2 will broadcast in color from October 3rd (a few days before the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the GDR on October 7th). The SECAM system is used here. Regardless of the technical introduction, the corresponding receivers remained unaffordable for the majority of the population until well into the 1980s.
    • The British ITV will be one of the first private television providers to start broadcasting in color from November 15th. Here, as in large parts of Western Europe, the PAL system is used.
  • October 3 - In East Berlin , the 368 meter high television tower is officially opened.
  • December 5 - Life magazine has an in-depth article on the My Lai massacre , a war crime committed by American soldiers against Vietnamese civilians in May 1968.

Radio

  • January 24th - The radio play State Funeral by the author Ludwig Harig , which was produced jointly by SR and WDR under the direction of Johann M. Kamps, causes a scandal . In the pastiche, only the original sound material of the funeral speeches on the occasion of the state funeral for Konrad Adenauer is used and blended against each other. Those responsible are accused of disrespecting a serious issue two years ago.
  • March 1st - The Japanese public broadcaster NHK begins broadcasting on VHF .
  • May 4th - On Ö3 you can hear the first episode of the radio tune Der Schallträger by and with Axel Corti .

  • January 3rd - Start of the ZDF crime series Der Kommissar with Erik Ode in the role of Commissioner Herbert Keller .
  • January 4th - The country mirror is broadcast for the first time on ZDF.
  • January 6th - ZDF shows our little show .
  • January 18th - The first episode of the ZDF hit parade moderated by Dieter Thomas Heck can be seen.
  • March 9th - ZDF and ORF add the Peter Alexander Show to their program. The program, which was broadcast until the mid-1990s, is one of the productions in German-language television history that achieved the highest ratings.
  • 31 March - The ORF shows before a visit to Vienna Lennon with a " Bagism " press conference at the Hotel Sacher the co-produced by him film Rape of John Lennon .   • October 5th - The BBC airs the first episode of the comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus .
  • October 11th - The crime series Columbo with Peter Falk in the title role celebrates its German premiere on German television . Columbo is one of the most successful crime series in television history. In the first production period up to 1978 a total of 69 episodes with numerous guest stars such as Johnny Cash (third season, episode 7) or Leonard Nimoy (second season, episode 6), who take on the role of the perpetrators. The unconventional investigation methods are even used in criminology under the name "Columbo Effect" .
  • November 27th - The television play Alma Mater by Dieter Meichsner (screenplay) and Rolf Hädrich (director) premieres on German television. The film criticizes the violent excesses of the student movement and the APO .
  • December 12th - start of the German-Swiss series Die Reiter von Padola .
  • December 15 - The ZDF shows for the first time young man on an old farm
  • December 19 - ZDF takes over air jumps for the first time .
  • December 20 - In Germany, Switzerland and Austria the first episode of the game show Wünsch dir was to see with Dietmar Schönherr and Vivi Bach .
