- The ARD sends Peter von Zahn as the first own correspondents in the United States .
- The Swiss company Revox puts the Revox T26 , the first tape recorder under its own brand name, into circulation.
- March 3 - Radio Corporation of America (RCA) unveils a portable television camera . The equipment consists of two units, a 3.6 kilogram black and white camera and a 24 kilogram transmitter unit that can be carried on the back.
- August 29th - The first issue of Mickey Mouse appears in Germany .

- The Austrian broadcasting group Rot-Weiß-Rot starts the quiz show The great opportunity with Maxi Böhm .
- February - The RIAS starts the crime series It happened in Berlin .
- April 19 - The NWDR first radiates the radio play dreams of Günter Eich from. The work, directed by Fritz Schröder-Jahn , caused a scandal among the audience due to its controversial content.
- October 28th - After the complete restoration of St. Peter's Church in Munich, which was destroyed in the war , the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR) uses the complete pause symbol Solang der old Peter again .
- November 14th - The NWDR in Cologne begins broadcasting the 8-part radio play Paul Temple and the Curzon case by Francis Durbridge with René Deltgen , Elisabeth Scherer and Kurt Lieck in the leading roles. The director was Edward Hermann .

- January 23rd - The Emmy Awards, which are being presented for the third time, include the Truth or Consequences quiz show .
- June 25 - The US premieres a color television commercial .
- September 4 - The live report of the peace negotiations with Japan in San Francisco is the first television program to be broadcast transcontinentally in North America.
- September 22 - In the US, a sporting event, the match between the football teams of Duke University and the University of Pittsburgh , will be broadcast transcontinental for the first time.
- September 27th - The Grundig factory transmitter in Fürth begins regular broadcasting .
- October 2nd - Danish (DR1) and Dutch (Nederland 1) television start their regular operations.
- October 2nd - The World Series season will be televised for the first time live across the United States.
- Oct. 15 - On CBS has the series I Love Lucy with Lucille Ball premiere. I love Lucy is considered the first sitcom in television history and has therefore shaped the genre to the present day. For the first time, the episodes will not be broadcast live, as was customary up to then, but instead recorded on film (in front of an audience, hence the typical laughs in the background).
- October 17th - Argentina enters the television age.
- December - The German TV broadcaster (DFF) begins its public trial operation.

- February 15 - Jane Seymour , British actress, is born in Greater London .
- May 26th - Ilona Christen , German TV presenter ( ZDF-Fernsehgarten ) and talk show host of her talk show of the same name , was born as Ilona Kleitz in Saarbrücken († 2009).
- July 30th - Hans Christiani , German actor ( Good Times, Bad Times ) is born in Berlin .
- August 13 - Peter Zimmermann , German actor, was born in East Berlin .
- August 20 - Kalle Pohl , German musician and comedian, is born in Düren . He became known to the television audience through the broadcast 7 Days, 7 Heads (1997–2005).
- December 8th - Elfi Eschke , German actress ( office, office ) is born in Bremen .
- December 14th - Mike Krüger , German comedian, cabaret artist and singer was born as Michael Friedrich Wilhelm Krüger in Ulm . He is known to the television audience through the programs Vier gegen Willi (1986–1989) and 7 Days, 7 Heads (1996–2005).
