- January 1st - The device-related license fee in Germany is replaced by a license fee, which is levied per place of residence or per business location as a flat rate for the possibility of being able to use broadcasts from public broadcasters. The contribution is not levied on residents of nursing homes. ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Contribution Service is responsible for moving in . For constitutional reasons, the new tax is often controversial.
- March 30 - The Egyptian attorney general orders the arrest of TV satirist Bassem Youssef for allegedly insulting President Mohammed Morsi .
- April - 30 years after the affair surrounding the alleged Hitler diaries , Stern editor-in-chief Thomas Osterkorn announced that the forgeries would be handed over to the Koblenz Federal Archives and thus made accessible to the public.
- April 1st - ZDF celebrates the 50th anniversary of the start of broadcasting.
- April 2nd - The Mainzelmännchen celebrate their 50th birthday.
- April 17 - The animated family The Simpsons celebrates the 25th anniversary of their premiere on US television.
- April 25 - A report by the FAZ revealed that Horst Tappert was a member of the Waffen SS around five years after his death . The Dresden historian and Nazi expert Jan Erik Schulte came across Tappert's files during research. A few days later, ZDF announced that it would no longer repeat episodes of the 280-part crime series Derrick .
- June 8th - Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg celebrates its tenth anniversary. It emerged from the merger of Sender Free Berlin and Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg . The festival, around the House of Radio and on Masurenallee , was attended by over 80,000 citizens.
- June 11th - The Greek government surprisingly announces that it will cease operations of the public broadcaster Elliniki Radiofonia Tileorasi (ERT) "because of unbelievable waste" with immediate effect.
- July 4th to 7th - Südwestrundfunk celebrates its third summer festival in Mainz. Around 27,000 visitors attended the various events and concerts. - August 6 - Internet entrepreneur Jeff Bezos (founder of mail order company Amazon.com ) buys traditional US newspaper The Washington Post .
- August 19 - A report by Editor-in-Chief Alan Rusbridger in The Guardian announces that the UK government has placed its editorial staff under heavy legal pressure and threatened costly lawsuits if further details of Edward Snowden's revelations are made public. For example, two hard drives had to be destroyed under the supervision of secret service employees in the editorial offices .
- November 7th - The Greek police in Athens vacate the ERT building, which has been occupied by former employees for five months . After the government's surprise shutdown of public television in June, journalists and staff maintained an emergency program that was broadcast over the Internet. At the same time, due to the difficult economic situation and high debts in Spain, the public service regional television in Valencia ceases to operate.
Radio
- February 11th - Hessischer Rundfunk broadcasts the hr2-kultur program nationwide only via two major VHF stations and six locations with low transmission power. Thus, the cultural program in parts of the Odenwald, Central and Eastern Hesse and the Waldeck-Frankenberg district can no longer be received via VHF. DAB + is not available nationwide in Hesse and is therefore no alternative to the discontinued VHF transmitters in Northwest and South Hesse. The remaining former hr2 frequencies are being given to the hr-info and You FM programs in protest of private competitors . - February 19 - After the medium-wave operation of the Rhine transmitter of the Südwestrundfunk , formerly Südwestrundfunk , which was built in 1950 , was stopped last year, the 150 meter high mast was blown up.
- March 20 - The Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk will cease operating its medium wave frequencies 783 kHz ( Wiederau location ), 1044 kHz ( Wilsdruff location ) and 1188 kHz ( Reichenbach location ), on which the MDR Info information program is being broadcast, on April 30, 2013 due to savings measures . - May 31st - American Forces Network switches off the traditional medium wave transmitter to 873 kHz for cost reasons. The station, based in Weißkirchen im Taunus, had broadcast the AFN program since 1951.
- June 7 - The Australian overseas service, Radio Australia , is closed for the 74th year of its existence. Some of the employees will be taken over by Australia Network, the international television network of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
- June 21 - Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR) has announced that it will end its medium wave broadcasts on December 31, 2014. The background to this is a decision by the Commission to determine the financial needs of the broadcasting corporations (KEF), which provides for the cessation of medium wave transmission by the other broadcasting corporations because of the high costs and poor sound quality. The locations in Flensburg (702 kHz), Lingen (792 kHz), Hemmingen (828 kHz) and Hamburg-Billwerder (972 kHz) are specifically affected . The half-hourly sea weather reports broadcast daily via the medium-wave transmitters Hamburg-Billwerder and Flensburg will be completely relocated to DAB + and the Internet.
- November 14th - The last edition of the interview series In Conversation designed by Michael Kerbler can be heard on Ö1 . The program guest is the writer Ilija Trojanow , who philosophizes about justice, democracy and the "question of violence ". Kerbler's successor will be the journalist Renata Schmidtkunz .

- March 3 - The History Series Vikings began History Channel broadcast his first self-produced screenplay based TV series.
