Edith Klinger
Edith Klinger (born Margulies ; * March 28, 1922 in Vienna ; † March 14, 2013 there ) was an Austrian animal rights activist and long-time television presenter of the popular ORF animal dispensing program “ Who wants me? ". In earlier years Klinger was known as a film and theater actress under the name Edith Prager . Most recently she lived with a cat in a small apartment on the edge of the Pötzleinsdorfer Schlosspark in Vienna.
Life
After the separation of her parents, Edith Margulies grew up with her mother Nema Peretianu in Bucharest , where she graduated from the renowned French Lyceum and the Academy for Performing Arts with outstanding success.
Career
After the end of the war, she returned to Vienna, the hometown of her father Otto Margulies , who had died under Nazi rule in the Theresienstadt ghetto , and began an acting career under the name of her first husband (Prague) . After marrying her second husband, the industrialist Harald Klinger , in 1954, she gave up this professional career, which later also took her to Munich , in order to support him in his company (textile printing works).
From 1964 Klinger was responsible for the “animal corner” in the Kronen Zeitung for 36 years . She also wrote cultural articles, travel stories as well as film and theater reviews for the paper; Due to her profound knowledge of foreign languages (French, Italian, Romanian, English), she was sometimes used for translation work. Before she was recruited by the publisher Hans Dichand as an editorial staff member, she had won his attention through the selfless regular funding of advertisements for the search for lost animals. She worked for three years without pay because she didn't want her commitment to become a profession. At the same time as the "animal corner" she had an animal welfare column in which she occasionally did not shy away from open conflict with business interests. Shortly after the television broadcast was discontinued, she was also deprived of taking care of the “animal corner”. Her television appearance on Hermes Phettberg's “Nette Leit Show” had great success .
From 1981 to the end of 1999 she was - after participating in the TV “Seniors Club” in the 1970s - as a television presenter for the popular ORF animal show “ Who wants me? “Only worked as an animal mediator on weekdays and soon always on Saturdays in the late afternoon, setting up strict criteria for the award. She always presented her show in a dirndl dress. In 2000 she was replaced by a 50 years younger former stewardess, Maggie Entenfellner , and the show was then discontinued as "out of date".
The animal welfare activist, who was also active in other countries (Italy, Greece, Egypt), had been in poor health since 2005 after she suffered a broken thigh. Her stepson is the journalist Tom Klinger, who worked for the Kronenzeitung and the Österreich newspaper , among others .
Edith Klinger is buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery (V. Tor, New Jewish Department)
