"Who wants me? - Animals are looking for a home ” was an animal dispensing program moderated by the animal rights activist Edith Klinger on the Austrian television broadcaster ORF , the first edition of which was shown on February 23, 1981.

Shipment history

Initially, the five-minute show was broadcast Monday through Friday at 7:25 p.m. Due to the success of the television audience, the program was soon extended to 15 minutes and aired on late Saturday afternoon (after 5 p.m., since 1983 at the latest).

Klinger presented her program in a dirndl because, in her opinion, this was better suited to the allocation of animals than a blouse or skirt. As a theme song served Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf .

Over a period of almost 19 years, Edith Klinger has not only found a new home for abandoned pets in more than 800 episodes of “Who wants me?” And taught them how to handle pets carefully, but also made ORF television history:

“There are three personalities at ORF who are truly journalistic, sovereign and profoundly involved in their craft: Hugo Portisch , Marcel Prawy and Edith Klinger . The latter was a fixed point of television programming in the 1980s and 1990s. [...] The climax were monologues based on the motto: “Look, the Asta - such a dashing dog. She likes children, but also eats dry food. Look, she's looking for a new home. Please, please. “Dog and Edith Klinger look faithfully into the camera. The animal lover's heart melts. Even today, 25 years after it was first broadcast, viewers feel guilty about having decided against Bauxi and Asta. Edith Klinger turned many people into animal lovers, we thank her for that. "

Natascha Kampusch reports in an interview with the Schweizer Tages-Anzeiger that as a child she reenacted "the animal show" Who wants me? ", In which a new home was sought for pets".

The Austrian caricaturist Manfred Deix was also a self-confessed “Who wants me?” He can be seen in detail in Peter Hajek's 1987 45-minute TV film portrait “Kiss the Hand, Austria - Manfred Deix and his pictures” (together with his wife Marietta) followed the fate of the dogs and cats abandoned by their owners.

Over the years, the title of the popular and very often parodied television show in Austria became a cliché and used for everything that was difficult to convey or that was put on the doorstep: be it divorced husbands, hunted managers or abandoned politicians.

In mid-December 1999, “Who wants me?” Was surprisingly discontinued as “out of date”. The follow-up program "Tierzuliebe", moderated by Maggie Entenfellner , achieved neither the popularity nor the level of awareness of "Who wants me?" And was discontinued in 2012.
