Ray Milton Dolby OBE (born January 18, 1933 in Portland , Oregon , † September 12, 2013 in San Francisco , California ) was an American engineer and inventor . He invented several important techniques related to magnetic sound recording and playback. In 1965 he founded the Dolby company .

Life

Ray Dolby learned the piano and clarinet in his childhood. For a while he contemplated becoming a cameraman in Hollywood. In 1948 he worked as a projectionist. While doing this, he met Alex Poniatoff , the founder of Ampex Corporation. He was impressed by the young Dolby, so he invited him to work for him. Dolby went to school three hours a day and five hours to work at Ampex. After high school, he graduated from Stanford as an engineer. He received a doctorate in 1961 from Cambridge University . He bequeathed a donation of £ 35 million from his estate to his college in Cambridge, Pembroke College . After completing his training, he spent two years in India as a UNO advisor, setting up a scientific laboratory. In total, he submitted more than 50 patents. His estimated net worth was $ 2.7 billion; thus he was number 149 on Forbes' list of the richest Americans.

effect

Dolby was one of the engineers who developed the first functional video recorder Quadruplex for Ampex .

After setting up his own business in London, he designed the Dolby A noise reduction system in the 1960s . This was followed by the Dolby B system, intended to improve the sound quality of compact cassettes . At the same time he was working on improving the sound of the film . The solution he and his colleague Ioan Allen found called Dolby Stereo combines Dolby A with a matrix and other circuits. Dolby C followed as an improved noise suppression system for cassette decks, Dolby SR for recording studios and later for film and derived from Dolby S for cassette recorders. A waste product of Dolby noise reduction was the dynamic bias Dolby HX , later in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen to Dolby HX Pro was developed. With these techniques, Dolby's name became synonymous with improved sound.
