production
development
NBC first announced production of the series on August 20, 2012. It was the day that the rights to the script by Sam Laybourne were transferred to production company Sony Pictures Entertainment . NBC outdone the other three major networks ( ABC , CBS and FOX ), also because NBC Fox promised to produce a full season. Loosely based on the life of Michael J. Fox, the series marks a big comeback for him after he left Chaos City (Spin City) as the lead actor in 2000 . The reason for this was his Parkinson's disease, which broke out in 1991.
Fox, who lives in real life in New York City with his wife Tracy Pollan and their four children , plays a husband and father of three children, all of whom also live in New York and face various daily challenges. Co-producer Will Gluck is responsible for the pilot episode, while series creator Sam Laybourne and screenwriter Alex Reid will be the showrunner .
Casting
On December 19, 2012, apart from Fox himself, the first cast was announced. Actor Wendell Pierce landed the role of boss Harris Green . On January 16, 2013, Katie Finneran , Conor Romero and Jack Gore , and Mike's sister and sons followed. The next day Betsy Brandt joined as Mike's wife Annie , on January 23rd Juliette Goglia as her daughter Eve and on January 26th, Ana Nogueira was signed as Kay as the last member of the main cast .
About half a year later, on July 12, 2013, it was announced that Anne Heche would fill the recurring role of colleague Susan Rodriguez-Jones . Michael J. Fox's wife Tracy Pollan can also be seen in a guest role. The final cast was announced in early September, namely Charles Grodin and Candice Bergen as Mike's parents.
Filming
Filming began on January 30, 2013 in New York. Although shooting was originally scheduled to start a week in advance, actress Betsy Brandt still had to finish shooting the series Breaking Bad . Production of the 22 episodes of the first season ended in December 2013.
