Erich Neuberg

Erich Neuberg (actually Erich Nechradola ; born August 12, 1928 in Vienna ; † January 10, 1967 there ) was an Austrian theater maker , film and television director .

Life

Neuberg belonged to the theater avant-garde of post-war Vienna, he founded the theater “49” on Vienna's Naschmarkt and staged at the University Studio, a student stage in which Helmut Qualtinger , Karlheinz Böhm and Hilde Sochor also took part. From 1953 to 1956 he was director of the Theater am Parkring. There was Samuel Beckett's " Waiting for Godot " premiered for Austria. Neuberg also staged radio plays for Austrian radio.

Starting in 1956, was Neuberg senior director and head of the teleplay department at the then-new medium of television ( ORF ). He shaped the first ten years of television in Austria. With “ Der Herr Karl ” (1961) Neuberg commissioned the ORF's first original television game , triggered a scandal and, when it was first broadcast on November 15, 1961, with Helmut Qualtinger in the title role, wrote television history. He directed groundbreaking television films such as 1961 " Tales from the Vienna Woods " based on Ödön von Horváth . With this television film, Neuberg triggered a Horváth renaissance.

This was followed by theater directing at the major stages in Vienna and at the Zurich Schauspielhaus . At the Vienna Volkstheater Neuberg directed Gustav Davis ' comedy Das Protektionskind (with Fritz Muliar ) in 1961 and Henrik Ibsen's Die Stützen der Gesellschaft in 1962, and in 1963 he staged Georg Büchner'sWoyzeck ” at the Burgtheater . In 1963 he also appeared as an actor in the film Staatsaffären (director: Wolfgang Glück ).

Neuberg died on January 10, 1967 in Vienna by suicide. His grave is located in the Vienna Central Cemetery .

The Erich Neuberg Prize for Directors has been awarded annually by the ORF to directors for the best directorial performance in a program or film produced by ORF since 1980 . The financial basis and initiative was donated by his father in 1980.
