The series is about a Darmstadt family and their strokes of fate. After a cinematic leap in time of around two years, the second season is about topics of the classic family such as building a house, getting older and health problems.

In season 3, the father Siegfried Drombusch dies of a heart attack . Mother Vera begins to work as a night nurse again. During the day she continues to run the family antique shop. She gets to know the newspaper editor Martin Sanders and falls in love with the still married man, while Uncle Ludwig Burlitz adores her. At the end of the season, the Sanders' marriage ends in divorce, but the relationship between Martin and Vera also does not last.

Season 5 is shaped more by the political and social topicality of the 1980s. The series focuses on social problems that were topical at the time: football riots, rejection of the police and the state, and the question of whether soldiers are murderers. After a further leap in time of two years, everyday life has returned to the Drombusch family. Mother Vera works as a tour guide, daughter-in-law Tina as editor, son Chris as a policeman and district manager, daughter Marion runs the “Katakomben” bar, Uncle Ludwig runs a wine bar in the courtyard of an old mill and baby Thomi is drafted into the armed forces.

Then the Drombusch family suffered another blow of fate. Police officer Chris Drombusch is so badly injured by hooligans during a football match that he dies as a result. His wife Tina, who hides a boy from the authorities, wants to adopt the child despite her husband's death. Vera Drombusch tries to prove that her son's death was not an accident, but that he was slain. At the end of the season, a video tape emerges that proves the manslaughter of Chris.

In the 6th season Vera Drombusch works again as a nurse after another leap in time of two years, Marion continues to run her restaurant and her boyfriend has a law firm. Tina continues to work as an editor and son Thomi is unemployed. The traces of the last few years did not leave Vera without harm. To depression ill, she goes to hospital treatment and is finally discharged well.

Ludwig, who was betrayed by his new love Marga Diebelshauser during the season, now runs a puppet theater on a fairground . After an accident, he wants to emigrate to Mauritius . Vera travels after him to convince him to come back home.

The on dementia ill grandmother Margarete Drombusch can not alone manage their lives. It inadvertently causes a fire that plunges the old mill into flames. Shocked by the news, Vera returns to Darmstadt with Ludwig. In anticipation of the fire insurance having to pay, Vera and Ludwig decide at the end of this last season to rebuild everything and run a small restaurant together.
