history

Springbok Radio was the first private radio station in South Africa to go on the air on May 1, 1950. The program was broadcast in English and Afrikaans . The target group was the white population of South Africa. The decline of Springbok Radio began with the broadcast of the first national television program on January 6, 1976 and the television commercial broadcast from 1978. With the advent of private television, the radio station lost its importance. Finally, broadcasting ceased on December 31, 1985.

archive

The Springbok Radio Preservation Society of South Africa (afrikaans: Springbokradio Bewaringsvereniging van Suid-Afrika ) is a non-profit organization that archives sound recordings, photos and other material from the station. Its seat is in Johannesburg . The archive houses many original recordings on cassette and tape. The company is currently digitizing many analog recordings. Since July 1, 2008, she has been operating Springbok Radio's Internet radio service in collaboration with the South African Broadcasting Corporation . This means that many older programs can be received again.
