Reinhold Viehoff

Reinhold Viehoff (born January 22, 1948 in Viersen ) is a German literary scholar , media scientist and media theorist .

Life

Reinhold Viehoff studied German , Catholic theology , sociology , political science and communication science , mainly in Bonn , but also in Cologne and Siegen . He completed his studies in 1971/72 with the first state examination for teaching. After an internship at the radio station WDR in Cologne, he took up a (short) study of psychology . In 1976, after a legal clerkship , he passed the second state examination and worked for several years as a teacher for German, Catholic religion and social sciences in Bonn.

In Siegen he received his PhD in 1979, and there began his work on a concept for an empirical literary study . In Siegen he came into contact with Siegfried J. Schmidt , where he worked at the special research area for screen media, where he completed his habilitation in 1989.

Then he was awarded the venia legendi (teaching license) for modern German literary studies and general literary studies in Siegen. At that time he was the editor of the magazine " SPIEL " (Siegen Periodical for Empirical Literature). In 1995 he was offered the chair for media and communication studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Uni Halle (MLU)). There he was significantly involved in setting up a corresponding course of study. This is mainly based on the cultural studies direction of the discipline. In 1996 he was involved in the founding of the media culture science course, in which the master’s degree has been awarded as a major since 2000; the course is now a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

In addition, he took numerous engagements in the research landscape. B. in 1996 founding member and board member of ZEUS, the Center for European Studies at the MLU Halle. Reinhold Viehoff has been Dean of the Philosophical Faculty II at MLU since 2005 . The special tasks in his current term of office arise from the various reforms of the degree programs at German universities. Viehoff is also a committed founding member of the Broadcasting and History Study Group and has led various research projects in Halle. A major project on GDR television history (DFG research group at the universities of Halle, Leipzig, HU Berlin and HFF Potsdam) was last completed in 2008. The volume "Deutsches Fernsehen Ost" (ed. Viehoff / Steinmetz) can be considered the first comprehensive representation of GDR television based on the book by Hickethier and Hoff (History of German Television).
