Helmut Kopetzky (born September 4, 1940 in Mährisch-Schönberg ) is a German radio feature writer .

Life

Kopetzky began his journalistic career as a newspaper reporter and editor in Fulda . From 1972 to 2007 he worked as a freelance writer and director mainly in Berlin.

Kopetzky was a co-founder of the campaign "Journalists warn of nuclear war" (1983). He organized feature workshops in Germany, the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina, Kenya, Poland, Romania, Moldova, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland. 2002–2008 he also works as a coach for the Master School of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Helmut Kopetzky has been living in Fulda again since 2005, where he and his wife set up a digital audio production studio.

Kopetzky produced over 100 long features and feature series for radio. The focus was on the First and Second World War, social life in the Federal Republic, the Soviet Union / Russia (historical accounts and everyday reports), South America, the Middle East (Syria, Israel), and the unification of the two German states.

In February 2008, Helmut Kopetzky was the first feature author to receive the Axel Eggebrecht Prize for his life's work. The Kopetzky private archive (120 digitized programs and extensive context material) was transferred to the German Broadcasting Archive in Frankfurt / Main (location: Potsdam-Babelsberg) in 2017 .

Working method

The trade magazine Cut reported on the production of the Fulda radio portal Ein Tag in der Stadt (Hessischer Rundfunk, 2001): “Kopetzky's work starts where Big Brother and the webcam leave off. The material is sifted, processed and compacted. He shifts the individual takes over and over again and mixes the recordings until they sound authentic and best reflect the impression he got on site. "With regard to the question of the authenticity of his radio features, Kopetzky says:" We may have to recreate the original sounds in the studio - what seems typical to us; what we still have 'in our ears' as the sum of our impressions. Montage and sound mixing are acoustic retelling of what we heard and experienced on the spot. Good radio, especially a feature, is reconstruction ”.
