In the middle of the 8th there was an Austrian soap opera , which was broadcast on ORF 1 every weekday for twelve weeks from April 10, 2007 . The series was advertised as the centerpiece of a comprehensive and trend-setting channel reform , but was only able to achieve less than a third of the planned audience numbers, had consistently negative to devastating criticism and was generally considered to have failed just three weeks after its premiere. Those directly responsible tried to save in the middle of the 8th with a general overhaul in terms of content and form. But after several ORF board members had publicly spoken out in favor of the immediate discontinuation of the series, it was decided to discontinue the program on June 29, 2007 with the 56th episode.
background
When Alexander Wrabetz took over from Monika Lindner as general manager at the end of 2006 , he promised to reform the ORF. According to him, it would be the biggest program reform of all time. To do this, he wanted to increase the number of viewers the night before, since at that time many viewers switched to German channels, especially RTL ( Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten ). That is why the board of trustees of ORF u. a. decided to end the transmission of the news broadcast Zeit in Bild 1 and to replace the ZiB on ORF 1 with the middle of the 8th .
Idol
The model for the series comes from the Netherlands, was called Samen and was sold there after a few months. The German company ProSiebenSat.1 secured the rights and has been producing the series Volles Haus since January 2008 (working title: Im Leben eine 1 ). However, this program has already been canceled.

Ossi Weininger, a grumpy but charming Viennese, and his girlfriend Claudia Holacek take over an old pub and transform it into a modern restaurant. On the side they move into an apartment in a nearby house. A flat share has rented not far away. The members are initially Verena Huber, Lisa Moizi, Robert Aufderklamm and Michael Obermaier.
The Steinlechner family lives a few blocks away, consisting of father Walter and mother Sylvia Steinlechner, two daughters Florentina and Julia Steinlechner and son Lukas Steinlechner, who soon moves into the shared flat.
The first episodes of the series are about the introduction of the characters and their everyday problems: Robert, who was born in Tyrol, is in love with Verena and tries to signal it to her; Ossi has problems with his relationship with Claudia because he was with one of her friends. In addition, Michael and Lisa come close to each other several times; Flo and Julia have adolescent lovesickness and Walter tries to keep his marriage going.
In the last episode Such a Crap (based on the audience's complaints) Lukas returns to Vienna after a two-year stay in the Netherlands, where a lot has changed. At the end of the episode, Ossi Weininger could be seen sitting alone in the Holacek when he complained to the ORF customer service about this new series ( the ones in the eighth do not speak as much as in the Ochten ).

The series is set in the 8th district of Josefstadt and was shot entirely in a 1600 square meter studio in Vienna-Liesing. For cost reasons, outdoor shots were omitted and these were replaced by chroma keying .

The ORF organized a competition for the title song. The Viennese band Mondscheiner with their song Mittendrin was able to prevail against the bands Seesaw , Shiver and SheSays .
Originally it was planned that Starmania winner Nadine Beiler would contribute the title song ( What we are ), but the production was not finished on time. In addition, the ORF did not want a "dramatizing" song, but a positive mood as the theme music.

The housemates
Verena Huber
Verena Huber is a native of Lower Austria who actually lives in the shared apartment because of a certain Patrick, who has left her. Nevertheless, she stays in the flat share because she has a good job with opportunities for advancement at Wiener Bank. In addition, it fits perfectly into the chaotic flat share.
Lisa Moizi
Without them something would be missing in the flat share. It appears humorous, funny and chaotic. Since she enrolled in a fashion school, things have always been uphill. But when her father fell seriously ill, mentally things went downhill and she urgently needs her friends.
Robert Aufderklamm
Robert is an emigrated Tyrolean with great technical talent. He is considered "women’s best friend". But when it comes to the next adventure, nobody thinks of him anymore, because women are easily blinded by men like his roommate Michi. But he only thinks of one woman when it comes to women: Verena.
Michael "Michi" Obermaier
Michael, the original Carinthian, is helpful and very sensitive, but very hidden. He appears very self-confident and confident. He also always scores with women. But that is not always long-lasting. One day he finds out that he's a sex addict. through the Internet acquaintance Lady Dotterblume he wants to change. but unfortunately it doesn't quite work out as he imagines it. Sylvia Steinlechner
Sylvia is a successful dentist from a middle-class, conservative family. She has a caring husband and three well-behaved children. She is also the head and the strong woman of the family. For her children, unlike her husband, she is a great role model.
Walter Steinlechner
Walter Steinlechner is Sylvia's conservative husband who wants to appear liberal, but then doesn't make it. He often goes to his children's parties, which bothers them a lot and what they find embarrassing. Walter is a teacher at a school by profession. Sometimes he has the feeling that his marriage to Sylvia has fallen asleep and needs a new boost. He is particularly jealous of Sylvia's work colleague Alexander, who temporarily moves in with them at the end of the series.
Lukas Steinlechner
Lukas is the funny and intelligent son of the Steinlechner couple. He is everyone's favorite, but his father always focuses on his bad qualities: unpunctuality, only eyes for girls, none for studying. That's why he moves from his parents' house to the shared flat.

Julia has not been a little girl for a long time, she already knows what her future will look like. She can only think of one word: show business. But first she has to graduate, which her parents forced her to do, even though she was made for life as a star. Florentina "Flo" Steinlechner
Florentina doesn't actually want to be called Flo, but the whole family does. Even if she is annoyed about this little thing, she is a well-brought up child: good grades, interest and she is very bright and fresh. She likes to withdraw to music. So far she has been spared from the teenage diseases. She and her boyfriend Kevin play in the school musical that her father wrote.
The Holacek
Ossi Weininger
Ossi looks charming, but grumpy. He is a true Viennese, grew up in Leopoldstadt, he had an eventful past and an adventurous life. Ossi is what you imagine a macho to be. Since he took over the restaurant with Claudia, you could almost believe that he only wants it to himself. However, if he didn't have Claudia, the restaurant would no longer exist. He also loves his Claudia and won't leave her anytime soon. After all, the two have gone through thick and thin and already moved together.
Claudia Holacek
Claudia Holacek is Ossi's better half. She is the driving force and the secret boss of the restaurant. She solves her problems with ease and always seems to have everything under control. She grew up in a middle-class family. Her mother had big plans for her, but nothing came of it. She is afraid of big strides like having children or getting married.
Angelika "Geli" Windbüchler
Angelika, the young waitress, appears naive and rural on the outside, she comes from a province in Lower Austria. The stories she always tells are particularly popular with her friends.

Audience ratings
The premiere was mixed with 364,000 viewers (17% market share of the total audience ) and below the expectations of 400,000 viewers, which were promised to the advertising customers and for whom the advertising prices had been raised accordingly in advance.
The average market share after the first week was 13.25%.
For comparison: In 2006 ORF1 achieved an average market share of 18.5%.
The downward trend continued in the following weeks. In the sixth week, a negative record was set on the traditionally bad Friday with a disastrous 80,000 viewers for the ORF.
In the ninth week the spiral continued to turn downwards. In the middle of the 8th, there was only a market share of just under 6% with 93,000 viewers.
On the Friday of the tenth week, a new negative record was set: 69,000 viewers represented a new low point. However, the average values rose for the first time compared to the previous week.
End of series
Due to low audience ratings and numerous reviews from the media, the series was discontinued on June 29, 2007.
In the last episode, Lukas returns from Amsterdam after 2 years and has to observe many changes. Michi has become gay, Robert and Verena are a couple and engaged, Lisa is pregnant. His sister Flo is now a star, his other sister Julia is a student and only has environmental improvements on her mind (mainly because of the new friend Georg). His parents have a secret affair after their divorce. Prohaska lives with the others in Lukas' room in the shared apartment and also works in Holacek. Geli was now married to a celebrity from America, and Ossi and Claudia have had triplets, one with a second name being Lukas. They don't know exactly what that is.
In 2008, according to SevenOne International , there was interest in Turkey in buying the series, which should have been broadcast in a dubbed version.
