Baron Franz Zorn von Bulach (born November 20, 1858 in Strasbourg ; † January 13, 1925 there ) was a Catholic priest, diplomat at the papal nunciature in Madrid, 1901-1919 auxiliary bishop in Strasbourg and titular bishop of Erythrae .

Life

Zorn von Bulach , who belonged to an old Alsatian noble family , was the son of Baron Franz Zorn von Bulach (1828–1890), chamberlain to Napoleon III. and Deputy of the Department ( Bas-Rhin ), as well as his wife Antoinette geb. Freiin von Reinbach-Hirtzbach.

Franz Zorn von Bulach studied law and worked for a short time in the Foreign Office after completing his legal clerkship. Ordained a priest in Strasbourg on August 10, 1891, he was appointed to the papal diplomatic service and worked as secretary of the apostolic nunciature in Madrid . In this capacity he is depicted in 1900, in volume 1, page 527, of the 3-volume monumental work “The Catholic Church of Our Time and its Servants in Word and Image” (Leo Society, Vienna 1900).

In 1900, Franz Zorn von Bulach was the preferred Alsatian candidate for the vacant Metz bishop's chair. However, Kaiser Wilhelm II enforced his favorite, the Reich German Benedictine and Prussian subject Willibrord Benzler .

Instead, Franz Zorn von Bulach was appointed auxiliary bishop of his home diocese of Strasbourg and titular bishop of Erythrae on October 24, 1901 . He received his episcopal ordination on November 3, 1901 in Rome from Francesco Cardinal Satolli (main consecrator ), as well as Curia Archbishop Edmund Stonor and Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val y Zulueta (later famous Secretary of State Pius X. ) as co-consecrators. From 1901 to 1919 he exercised the office of auxiliary bishop in Strasbourg, from 1903 he was also vicar general of the diocese; including the precarious time of the First World War , when the diocese belonged to the combat zone and countless foreign soldiers stayed there. After France took over Alsace in 1919, the bishops under the previous German government had to resign. Franz Zorn von Bulach did the same. He died in 1925 as a bishop emeritus.

A 15-page “Presentation by the Most Revered Baron Franz Zorn von Bulach, Auxiliary Bishop of Strasbourg, presented at the 21st International Eucharistic Congress in Montreal on September 9, 1910” was published as a brochure in Munich . He was appointed by the Emperor to be a member of the first chamber of the Landtag of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine .

His brother Hugo Zorn von Bulach was a politician and member of the German Reichstag.
