Early years

In 1971 he took his religious vows and was ordained a priest. He then worked as a catechist in Toruń , Szczecinek and Kraków . In Cracow he also worked as a university chaplain. From 1986 to 1991 he lived in various monasteries in Germany .

Radio Maryja

After returning to Poland in 1991, he founded the radio station Radio Maryja . The great success prompted him to found other companies in the following years, including a. the “University of Social and Media Culture” ( Wyższa Szkoła Kultury Społecznej i Medialnej ) in Toruń, of which he is the rector , the Catholic television station TV Trwam and the daily newspaper Nasz Dziennik .

The content of the companies founded by Rydzyk deal primarily with the teaching of the Catholic Church and socio-political issues. The official goal is evangelization . Critics accuse him of propagating nationalism and Catholic traditionalism and of distorting the teaching of the Catholic Church. He is also criticized because of anti-Semitic statements and political opinion-making. Proponents and friends of Rydzyk, on the other hand, value him as a charismatic personality who fights against moral decline and for Catholic values. Its influence on the political scene and especially the conservatism camp is considered immense.

The Vatican kept its distance from Rydzyk during the pontificate of John Paul II , the Polish Pope did not grant him an audience. The Curia in Rome temporarily ordered him to remain silent when he wanted to mobilize his supporters against Poland's accession to the European Union . The long-time Primate of the Catholic Church in Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp and the Krakow Archbishop Stanisław Dziwisz , the former private secretary of John Paul II, openly opposed Rydzyk, but could not assert themselves with this line.

In the presidential election campaign in 2005 , his plea for Lech Kaczyński was probably one of the decisive factors in his election success. Originally Rydzyk was close to the LPR party , but then supported the twin brothers Jarosław and Lech Kaczyński and their party PiS , especially in the election campaign for the 2007 parliamentary elections . Because of his positions, there were conflicts with some Polish bishops who were in the position of Rydzyk and his However, media companies do not take a single line. In addition, the radio station Radio Maryja is not subordinate to the Polish episcopate , but to the Warsaw Province of the Redemptorist Order. Numerous journalists accuse him that certain questions about the financing of his media companies are also unanswered. So far, however, no concrete evidence of legal violations has been provided.

Beginning of July 2007 was Rydzyk by a verbal gaffe during a lecture at the "School of Social and Media Culture" listen up: He threw President Kaczynski "devotion" towards the Jews before, calling the woman literally as "witch" that one of the euthanasia out should. These statements became known to the public through a recording (made by a student) and sparked massive controversy.

At the end of July 2007 it became known that Israel was urgently demanding that the Polish government and the Catholic Church in Poland investigate the statements made by Rydzyk in the spring of 2007, in which he allegedly described Jews as greedy, the Polish President Lech Kaczyński is submissive and subservient to the Jews. The Israeli ambassador to Poland, David Peleg, called this "one of the worst anti-Semitic attacks in decades". On July 10, 2007, the Simon Wiesenthal Center asked Pope Benedict XVI. that Rydzyk was relieved of his functions because of his anti-Semitic statements. A little later, however, Rydzyk met Pope Benedict XVI for the first time.

According to a notification from the Polish Public Prosecutor's Office on August 21, 2007, the reasons for the above Allegations against Rydzyk's investigations for "insulting the head of state and the Jewish nation" were suspended.

Caused a stir another racist statement in 2009, following an out of the West African Republic of Togo originating Franciscans in July at a Pilgrims' Mass in Czestochowa greeted with the words: "Beloved, now a Negro. Oh God, he didn't wash. ”The remark was made in front of more than 100,000 believers and was broadcast on Radio Maryja and Rydzyk's TV station TV Trwam. The religious of Togolese origin has Polish citizenship and has lived in Poland for decades. Rydzyk later portrayed the saying as a joke and apologized for it.

Another anti-Semitic derailment resulted in an official complaint from the Polish Foreign Ministry to the Holy See in June 2011 . Rydzyk had described Poland as a "totalitarian state" and claimed that it had "not been ruled by Poland since 1939". This has been widely interpreted as an allusion to a supposed Jewish conspiracy.

In 2007 Rydzyk tried unsuccessfully to apply for funding of 15 million euros from the European Union for his "College for Social and Media Culture" in Toruń. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk (PO) announced in 2011 that he would remove Rydzyk's “undeserved privileges”.

On the initiative of Rydzyk, the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary Star of the New Evangelization and St. John Paul II was built in Toruń from 2012 . The church consecration took place on May 18, 2016 with his presence and numerous guests of honor (including the Polish President Andrzej Duda , the Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło (PiS) and the Sejm member and PiS party leader Jarosław Kaczyński ). Rydzyk's Catholic television station TV Trwam broadcast this entire event live, which lasted more than five hours.
