Silence

A requirement of silence is the requirement for a certain person or a certain group of people not to express themselves, or the requirement not to say anything about certain topics and to pass them on to others. The term or practice occurs in different contexts.

New Testament

The "Pauline command of silence" towards women

In ancient oriental society - also in Orthodox Judaism - it was unusual for women to be able to express themselves in public on political issues or questions of faith. The Apostle Paul is ascribed the “Pauline command of silence” ( 1 Cor 14.33b – 35  EU ), according to which women in the Judeo-Christian community should be silent.

"Messiah Secret"

The theological term “Messiah's secret” (see also: Gospel according to Mark and Life-Jesus-Research ) connects the miracles of Jesus with a commandment of silence . The enthusiastic recounting of the miracles by the healed themselves or by surrounding witnesses could namely obscure the view of the overall work of Jesus and thus hide his messiahship . So Jesus forbade his disciples before his death to proclaim him as the Christ. Bible passages that contain the commandment of silence are found in Mark 1:34; 1.44; 3.12; 5.43; 7.36; 8.30; 9.9.

Publication bans in the Catholic Church

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Roman Catholic Church can impose a " prohibition of publication" (also called silence ) on deviants in the faith who teach in the church's name and on behalf of universities or schools in order to encourage them to reflect and to repent with regard to theirs Move your point of view.
