The Guglhupf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Guglhupf was a cabaret show on the Austrian radio station Ö1 . From 1978 to 2009 it was broadcast weekly on Sunday mornings, with interruptions during the holidays. The signature spoke of Gugelhupf as a work of art made of dough and raisins that also needs a little bit of salt , but in Austria Gugelhupf is also associated with the popular name for the Viennese “ Narrenturm ”, an insane asylum built under Joseph II . On November 1, 2009, ORF announced the Guglhupf by broadcasting the new program Welt Ahoi! which was discontinued in December 2010.

Signation

The text for the characteristic melody by Bronner / Wehle, sung in lively, syncopated 4/4 time in tenor , read:

What Sunday only
makes it a Sunday,
is the ring cake -
the Guglhupf:

As a round G'sicht,
the always friendly laughs,
is the ring cake -
the Guglhupf. Every Austrian likes

this work of art made of dough and raisins
.
But to gain flavor, you
also need a little bit of salt.

It has just come off the oven
and it is important that
it does not lose its freshness ... That's why
our Guglhupf is now
served hot.

At the end of the program, the following text was sung to the melody of the fourth part above:

With this we have inhaled
the last crumbs
of our Guglhupf ...
and next Sunday a new Guglhupf,
a new Guglhupf, a new Guglhupf will be served.

Farewell quotes

Lore Krainer was pleased when the last Guglhupf broadcast was over: "That I can cancel the Kronenzeitung and no longer have to read it."

Kurt Sobotka: ... "because the real art is to criticize people in such a way that they have to laugh themselves."

“One is lucky in Austria that really all politicians are doing something stupid,” smiles Sobotka. "Otherwise we wouldn't have been able to do the show every week," added Krainer.

On the “not entirely voluntary” end of the series: “We have already experienced and survived a number of directors” (Krainer)… “With all that is kicked out of the ORF, we are in excellent company with the radio symphony orchestra ” (Prikopa).

Readers' comments Die Presse 20. – 23. June 2009: “The Guglhupf belongs to the radio like the critical court jester to the Empire”… “A thousand thanks to the 'Guglhupfteam'! Hopefully you have not been retired because of muzzle exemption ”…“ This unbearable opinion of opinion and opinionated moralizing is finally over ”…“ What kind of Sundays should that be without Guglhupf? ”

Reader's comments “Der Standard” 22. – 25. June 2009: "I still have a huge appetite for Guglhupf ... I hope the ORF will think about it again." ... "No harm in the guglhupf - it had exceeded its shelf life by around 15 years" ... "There is no other station to be found, who takes over the Guglhupf? ”…“ One can be glad that a legend is finally put to rest ”.
