José María de Areilza (1976)

José María de Areilza y Martínez de Rodas, Conde de Motrico (born August 3, 1909 in Portugalete , Province of Bizkaia , Basque Country , Spain , † February 22, 1998 in Madrid ) was a Spanish diplomat and politician .

biography

De Areilza was raised to the nobility as Conde de Motrico in 1932 and was Mayor of Bilbao between 1937 and 1938 .

He entered the diplomatic service during the reign of General Francisco Franco and was ambassador to Argentina between 1947 and 1950 . From 1954 to 1960 he was accredited as ambassador to the USA and subsequently as ambassador to France until 1964 .

He was a close advisor to the pretender to the throne Juan de Borbón y Battenberg . However, Franco preferred his son Juan Carlos as heir to the throne in the event of his return to the monarchy .

After his son's accession to the throne as King Juan Carlos I after Franco's death in 1975, de Areilza became Spain's Foreign Minister on December 11, 1975 and during his term of office, which lasted until July 7, 1976, played a key role in the spread of the new democratically oriented system in Spain of the world.

For his services to politics and the Spanish language , he was elected a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Language (Real Academia Española) in 1987 .
