Nino Pirrotta

Nino Pirrotta (born June 13, 1908 in Palermo , † January 20, 1998 ibid) was an Italian musicologist and teacher.

Pirrotta studied at the universities of Palermo and Florence (until 1931). His specialty was the music of the 14th century. With the philologist Ettore Li Gotti he published the book Il Sacchetti e la Tecnica Musicale in 1935 . After further work in the 1930s and 1940s, he also turned to the Italian Ars Nova , on which he published studies and articles as well as sources. He later conducted research on the Florentine Camerata and the prehistory and early history of opera from Angelo Poliziano to Claudio Monteverdi . In 1970 he received the Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society for his book Li Due Orfei .

Pirrotta initially taught at the Conservatory of Palermo and from 1948 to 1956 was the librarian of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. After a visiting professorship in 1954 at Princeton University , he was from 1956 to 1972 librarian and professor of music at Harvard University . He then became a professor at La Sapienza University in Rome.
