Macroscopic features

The 6–10 cm high and 6 cm wide fruiting body is circular to club-shaped, truncated or deepened like a funnel. The edges are turned up a little and lobed irregularly. The top is initially pale purple, later purple-gray and finally ocher to olive-colored. The outside is provided with irregular, forked ridges , which have a fleshy-light purple, later yellowish color. They run down almost to the base of the stem, which is tapered and has a smooth surface. The spore powder is a strong ocher color. The meat is white, tender and has a mild taste.

Microscopic features

The spores are covered with fine warts and are elongated in shape, spindle-shaped with hilar appendix . The size is approximately 9–12 × 4–5.5 μm.

Ecology and phenology

Pig's ears are usually found in tufts overgrown in witch rings or rows from summer to autumn , especially in mountain coniferous forests with limestone soils. They are quite rare. The species forms a mycorrhiza with spruce, fir and red beech.

meaning

The pig's ear is considered a very good edible mushroom . The mushrooms become a bit bitter with age. Confusion with poisonous species is almost impossible. Occasionally they are offered in markets.
