Cornelis Kalkman also: Kees Kalkman (born May 5, 1928 in Delft , † January 19, 1998 in Leiden ) was a Dutch botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Kalkman ".

Life

Kalkman attended high school in The Hague , where he graduated from college in 1946. After completing basic military service, he began studying botany at the University of Leiden in 1948 . Here he completed his doctorate in biology in 1955, went to Dutch New Guinea in 1956 and was employed in 1959 as an employee of the Reich Herbarium in Leiden. During this time he undertook expeditions to the Star Mountains and the volcanic Dome peaks in Papua New Guinea for the Royal Dutch Botanical Association ( Dutch Koninklijke Nederlandse Botanische Vereniging ) in 1959 and 1966 . Kalkman had already given botanical lectures at the Leiden University from 1960 and on April 28, 1965, Kalkman received his doctorate under Cornelis Gijsbert Gerrit Jan van Steenis (1901–1986) with the topic The old world species of Prunus subg. Laurocerasus including those formerly referred to Pygeum for Doctor of Biology. In addition, he specialized in his work on the rose family and described them for the Flora Malesiana. He also participated as an editor in encyclopaedic works in which the plants from the Malay region were described.

On November 24, 1972, he was appointed professor of special botany by the Leiden University, which he took on on December 1 of that year and on March 23, 1973 gave his introductory speech on herbarium systematics. With this task he was also assigned the scientific direction of the Reich Herbarium, he became dean of the mathematics and natural science faculty in 1980/81 and after he had ceased his management at the Reich Herbarium in 1988, he was scientific director of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden from 1989 to 1990 . Kalkman was chairman of the Royal Dutch Botanical Association for three years, he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and Hermann Otto Sleumer named the plant species Dimorphanthera kalkmanii after him. In 1990 he retired and retired on November 12th of that year. Nevertheless, he still gave lectures for the Imperial Herbarium. After his death, he was buried on January 23rd in the cemetery in Rhijnhof.
