Hermann Otto Sleumer

Hermann Otto Sleumer (born February 21, 1906 in Saarbrücken , † October 1, 1993 in Oegstgeest , South Holland ) was a German-Dutch botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Sleumer ".

Live and act

The son of a pharmacist graduated from the Friedrich-Gymnasium Freiburg in 1924. He then worked as a pharmacy intern in Alfeld ad Leine with the pharmacist and regional florist Joseph Förster and also in Hildesheim until 1926 .

From 1926 to 1927 he was a pharmacist's assistant in Wernigerode and Trossingen . From 1927 to 1929 he studied pharmacy at the University of Tübingen (botany with Walter Zimmermann ) and from 1928 in Munich with Karl von Goebel . In 1929 he passed the pharmaceutical state examination and studied from 1929 to 1932 natural sciences and especially botany and geology at the University of Freiburg with Friedrich Oltmanns and Felix Rawitscher .

In 1932 he was promoted to Dr. phil. nat. PhD. Topic of his dissertation: "On sexuality and cytology by Ustilago Zeae (Beckm.) Unger" .

From 1932 to 1933 he worked at the Badisches Weinbauinstitut in Freiburg with Karl Müller . He then got a job as an assistant at the Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem with Ludwig Diels . From 1936 to 1939 he was also Paul Schürhoff's private assistant . During this time he also completed his habilitation (1937). His habilitation thesis is entitled: “Monograph of the genus Hydnocarpus Gaertn. together with description and anatomy of the fruits and seeds of their pharmacognostically important species (Chaulmugra). "

During the war, Sleumer was drafted into the medical service from 1944 to 1945 and then had a teaching position for botany and pharmacognosy at the University of Berlin from 1946 to 1949 .

From 1949 to 1953 he was Associate Professor of Botany at the Instituto Miguel Lillo the Elder. National Univ. Tucuman / Argentina (with Kurt Hueck ).

In 1953 he returned to Europe and until 1956 worked for the Flora Malesiana Foundation at the Rijksherbarium of the University of Leiden , Netherlands . From 1956 to 1971 he worked as the curator of the Rijksherbarium.

Sleumer had been a Dutch citizen since 1962 . From 1976 to 1977 he was the curator of the Amazonian Botany at the New York Botanical Gardens.

His main areas of research were pharmacognosy, systematics and plant geography.

Honors

The monotypical genus Sleumerodendron Virot from the silver tree family (Proteaceae) with the species Sleumerodendron austro-calcedonicum is named after Sleumer.
