Deutscher Jugendschatz with the supplement “Health Care and Youth Education” was a weekly newspaper in Leipzig .

history

The magazine was first published by Verlag Thiele, then by Wilhelm Fink from 1st year 1879, No. 1–52 to 2nd year 1880, No. 1–26. The editors-in-chief of the paper were Wilhelm Hasenclever and Bruno Geiser .

Over 1500 copies were sold by subscription.

Employees were Wilhelm Liebknecht , Meta Wellmer , Rudolf Lavant , Eduard Reich, Heinrich Oidtmann , Emil Roßbach, Johannes Wedde (pseudonym Silvanus), Max Vogler .

In order to reach young readers, the circle around Liebknecht founded the first socialist illustrated youth magazine with the Leipzig publishing house W. Fink . As Wilhelm Hasenclever wrote in the foreword to the second year, the magazine had to be discontinued (for undisclosed reasons), but they wanted to "continue to run the 'Jugendschatz' company in a different form", which did not happen.

In the preface it says:

“The attitude of the employees guarantees that the 'German Youth Treasure' only serves the purpose of enlightenment and keeps away from all the stupid and bigoted hustle and bustle that we so often encounter in German youth publications. In addition to entertainment, it is intended to stimulate various fields of science. Special attention is paid to cultural and natural history. "

Instead of the discontinued weekly paper, a Christmas book with the same title should be published every year at the end of November. The categories of youth education and health care were taken over by the “ New World ” from the youth treasure . The Christmas book published in October 1880 with the title “German Youth Treasure A Festive Present for Mature Youth” lagged behind the magazine in terms of its political and ideological power and was for the time being the last of its kind.

It was not until 1887 (1st edition) and 1893 (2nd edition) that Hasenclever appeared under the title “Illustrirter Deutscher Jugendschatz. A festive offer for boys, young men, girls and virgins ” , the continuation of the youth treasure.

From the foreword:

“Many readers of this youth publication will still remember the“ German Youth Treasure ”, which was published a few years ago by E. Thiele in Leipzig by the same publisher. First a periodical youth publication, it later turned into a kind of yearbook, which we hereby renew. "
