Along the southern outskirts of Alexandria, Interstate 94 and US Highway 52 , which run on the same route here and lead from the Twin Cities in a westward direction, lead in a west-east direction. Minnesota State Routes 27 and 29 meet in downtown . All other roads are subordinate, partly unpaved roads as well as inner-city connecting roads.
A Canadian Pacific Railway runs north-south through the urban area of Alexandria.

history
The first white settlers were the brothers Alexander and William Kenkead from Delaware in 1858 . In 1859 a post office was set up, headed by Alexander Kenkead as post holder. The place where even more settlers settled at that time was named after the first name of the postman Alexandria .
The city grew steadily during the civil war . In 1862 a US Army fort was built in Alexandria.
In 1877 the place was incorporated as a " Village ". In 1908 a municipal statute was adopted and in 1909 the place was given the status of "City".
In a museum in Alexandria is the runestone of Kensington , which was "found" around 30 km southwest of Alexandria, but is a fake.
