Fritz Kolbow (born June 9, 1873 in Berlin ; † July 8, 1946 in Schöneiche near Berlin) was a German mouleur .

Life

It is not known where Fritz Kolbow learned his trade. Comparisons with the work of Heinrich Kastens, who worked for the dermatologist Oskar Lassar , only suggest that Kolbow did not go through the same school as this one. Thomas Schnalke suspects that he might have learned how to make medical wax pictures from the Castan brothers or on trips to Vienna , Paris or London . In any case, from 1896 he was active in Berlin and manufactured moulages for various clients. In 1910 he moved to Dresden , where the first International Hygiene Exhibition and later the Hygiene Museum were planned. He headed the Pathoplastic Institute of Karl August Lingner . In 1922 Kolbow returned to Berlin and opened his "Atelier for Medical Teaching Aids Berlin: Fritz Kolbow". This company existed until the Second World War . Ruined, impoverished and malnourished by the war, Kolbow died in 1946 in his apartment at Wildkanzelweg 14 in Schöneiche near Berlin.

Fritz Kolbows Moulagen, which he usually labeled “F. Kolbow ”, were of high quality; his techniques were passed on and influenced the moulage traditions both at the Dresden Hygiene Museum and in the dermatology clinic of the University Hospital Zurich . Most of the showpieces in Edmund Lesser's moulage collection in the Charité of Kolbow probably came from and were produced in the latter's first phase in Berlin. The ophthalmologist Richard Greeff is likely to have worked closely with Kolbow for a time and used his moulages for images in his atlas of external eye diseases .

Many moulages that Fritz Kolbow had made were sold to candle dealers and melted down in the 1960s. In Berlin Medical Historical Museum of the Charité is still testimonies are his work.
