Save the Elephants , (STE), is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in London that was founded in September 1993 by Iain Douglas-Hamilton . The internationally active association is committed to the preservation of elephant habitats. In addition, she investigates the change in the population and tries to change it positively with breeding. At the same time, the organization wants to improve the reputation of the elephants among the population. The organization works with a four-pillar principle: protection of the elephant habitats, research, grassroots organization and involvement or education of the public through the dissemination of information via television, films, publications and new media.

In November 2016, the organization was awarded the Bambi in the Our Earth category.

history

Founder Douglas-Hamilton was in Africa for many decades and researched the habits of elephants. He wrote books and made films. However, he also saw how endangered African elephants are. One of Douglas-Hamilton's first personal successes was that the Washington Convention on Endangered Species in 1989 banned the trade in ivory. His reports were decisive for the decision. Years later he founded the Save the Elephants organization in London.

description

The organization is mainly represented in Kenya , Gabon , the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mali . With large-scale actions, activists prevented the elephant habitats from being further destroyed. They organized events to educate the civilian population to get them to their side. Especially in the Samburu National Reserve in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya , Save the Elephants conducts studies of elephants. In numerous film, television and print articles, including National Geographic, the organization reports and explains about its work and the current elephant population. The most famous television series is the unit series The Secret Life of Elephants broadcast on BBC Natural History .

The Save the Elephants organization has recently started working with Google Earth Outreach. As a result, it is now more efficient to protect areas and migration routes of the elephants.

Four pillars

Research

This pillar includes research on animals in their natural habitat, but also in the rearing stations. It is closely linked to the three other pillars. One focus of research into elephants is to understand the migration routes. For example, GPS / GSM transmitters (collars) are attached to the animals to find out the important routes of the elephants. These are then monitored more closely. In cooperation with the Safaricom Foundation , information on the current position of the animals, the air temperature and the humidity is worked out every three hours. The research work of Save the Elephants is roughly divided into two areas, pure research and applied research. The former deals with the perspective of pure science. There the behavior of the animals is traced and explanations are sought. One examines how elephants use and change their environment and how the information exchange works. Applied research is part of the animal rescue strategy. Based on the location data, detailed maps were created that show the whereabouts of the animals. This reduces u. U. unwanted confrontations with people.

Protection

To ensure the protection of the elephants and their habitats, the organization works closely with state and non-state institutions such as universities, research institutions and authorities. In this way, it is clarified in advance whether the buildings in the planning stage will be placed in migration routes for the animals or whether construction areas will destroy important habitats. Live tracking enables rangers to intervene quickly and effectively. In addition, the population is informed that they too must be protected from any attacks by the elephants. Save the Elephants works closely with CITES in this area. One of the main tasks is to combat poaching and the ivory trade.

Grass roots

This column deals with the coexistence of the local population with the elephants. In meetings and public events there is an exchange of views and knowledge between the population and the organization's researchers. This term also deals with supernatural events around the elephant. This is how African fairy tales are collected, translated and interpreted.

Education

Addresses engaging and educating the public. In addition, Elephant Watch (EW) enables the population, especially children, to watch the elephants from a safe distance. Schools are also financed by Safe the Elephant so that the children can enjoy a high school education so that they do not have to resort to poaching to earn money.

Elephant Watch

Elephant Watch Safari works closely with Save the Elephants. Safaris and tours of the elephants in their natural habitats are offered.
