His brother (original title: Son frère ) is a French drama directed by Patrice Chéreau from 2003 . It is based on the novel of the same name by Philippe Besson .
action
In February, Thomas suddenly appears at the door of his younger brother Luc. Both siblings have had no contact with each other for a long time. Luc felt abandoned by Thomas when he urgently needed him - he had come out as homosexual to the family. Luc thought Thomas was an egoist. Now Thomas tells him that he suffers from a rare blood disease. He has been sick for two years and has been cared for by his girlfriend Claire. Now he has relapsed and has to go to the hospital the next day. Thomas asks Luc to go to the hospital with him. Here Thomas collapses after the blood sample and has to be reanimated. Luc is shocked.
Thomas has a disease in which the blood platelets are destroyed by his own organism. Smaller wounds do not heal quickly, so that the patient could bleed to death in an emergency. Doctors suspect that the spleen is the destructive force in Thomas' body. As his condition worsens, the spleen is surgically removed. However, it turns out that not only the spleen is the cause of the platelet destruction, but also probably the liver, which cannot be removed. The doctor tries to prepare Thomas for a life without platelets, a life without injuries, with extreme caution, but also with the possibility of suffering severe hemorrhage at any time . When Claire realizes that Thomas would rather have his brother Luc around him than her in his situation, she leaves him. Claire's suffering and his seemingly unemotional acceptance of his situation have also burdened Claire too much.
Thomas has had enough after weeks in the hospital and no prospect of a cure. He lets himself be released from the hospital and signs a declaration in which he releases the doctors from their responsibility. With his brother and mother, he drives to their house in Brittany . An old man tells them about the currents of the sea and how his nephew simply no longer appeared on the surface from diving a long time ago. Thomas explains to Luc where and how he wants to be buried. One day Thomas' bed is empty. The night before he got naked into the water and went into the sea until the waves swallowed him. The next morning Luc suspects that Thomas will not come back. He tells his mother and Claire that Thomas is still sleeping or taking a walk. In the evening he reports Thomas missing. The policeman said to another that the missing person might be the drowned man who was recovered with a head wound. Luc stays calm.

criticism
The film service called his brother a "complex filmic study of the physical existence of humans and their frailty". Due to its "great intensity as well as its formal radicalism [...] the film spans a wide network of associations, where it is emphatically about the dignity of the human."
For Cinema , the film was “a tragedy that was played sensitively and convincingly, but at times too lengthy”, which, however, only insufficiently characterizes the characters and gives them little hope. “'His brother' looks for the changes that illness causes - physically and mentally. The film explores its subject unpretentiously and with indulgent objectivity, ”wrote Der Spiegel .
