action

The film tells the story of the Israeli Ulman family. Daphne Ulman works as a nurse. During the summer vacation, her husband dies of a bee sting and the subsequent allergic reaction. Suddenly Daphne is alone with four growing children and the family threatens to break up because of the grief and further problems. The youngest daughter no longer wants to go to school because she feels uncomfortable in the new school. The eldest son has already dropped out of school and struggles through life with odd jobs and daughter Maya has love and life sorrows that mean she misses her mother. After the death of her husband, she is so busy with her work that she doesn't have the time for the family. It was only when the Russian immigration doctor Vladimir Daphne made serious advances that she saw the light again at the end of the tunnel and found the strength to solve family problems. When the youngest son Ido realizes his dream of a world record in diving and jumps into a swimming pool without water, then falls into a coma, she finally knows that her family is on the same edge of the pool and there is a risk of falling. She takes her problems back into her own hands.

background

Broken Wings is Nir Bergman's first feature film. In Germany it was shown for the first time at the Berlinale 2003 in the Panorama section and was released in theaters in January 2004.

Reviews

“Despite the serious subject, the sensitively and densely staged drama has definitely humorous moments. The universal history reflects a widespread mood within Israeli society beyond the framework of the private. "

“In his debut film, director Nir Bergman describes how a family deals with the loss of a loved one with restraint and yet full of warmth, emotion and absurd wit. He skilfully interweaves the different behaviors and creates the difficult balance between tragedy and comedy without ever becoming flat or trivial. "
