Bishop John Tuigg

John Tuigg (born February 19, 1821 in Donoughmore , County Cork , Ireland , † December 7, 1889 in Altoona , Pennsylvania , USA ) was Bishop of Pittsburgh .

Life

John Tuigg attended All Hallows College in Drumcondra . In December 1849 he went to the United States at the invitation of Bishop Michael O'Connor SJ . John Tuigg studied Catholic theology and philosophy at St. Michael's Seminary in Pittsburgh . He received on 14 May 1850, the sacrament of Holy Orders . Tuigg became private secretary to the Bishop of Pittsburgh. He was also pastor of the parish of St. Bridget .

On January 11, 1876, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Bishop of Pittsburgh. The Archbishop of Philadelphia , James Frederick Bryan Wood , ordained him episcopal on March 19 of that year ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Allegheny , Michael Domenec CM , and the Bishop of Erie , Tobias Mullen . On August 3, 1877, John Tuigg was also Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Allegheny.
