The Freiburg State Archive is the archive of the Swiss canton of Freiburg . It opens up the historical archives of the canton's authorities and administration, ensures that they are preserved and makes them accessible to the public.

The archive holdings kept by the StAF are registered as cultural assets of national importance .

history

The StAF is an essential part of the historical cultural assets of Freiburg, as its origin goes back to the foundation of the city ​​of Freiburg in 1157 by Duke Berthold IV. Von Zähringen . Until 1798, the archive holdings grew with the deliveries of the authorities of the city-state of Freiburg and the areas it had acquired. In 1747 the StAF became an independent administrative unit, and in 1804 the office of state archivist was introduced.

After the Ancien Régime is abolished, the StAF will keep the official archives from the authorities and the cantonal administration, which will in future be kept separate from those of the city of Freiburg.

The documents of the city republic and finally the canton of Friborg were initially kept in the «council and court house», i. H. in the government building, which at that time was behind the St. Niklauskirche ; In 1478 they were housed in the new office building. In 1917, the StAF relocated to the former Augustinian monastery in Freiburg's old town, and in 2003 it was moved to its current location, the "Industrielle", a former cardboard box factory near the Freiburg train station.

Mission and activities

The main task of the StAF as a central government service is to evaluate, collect, store and record the documents of all authorities, offices and institutions of the state of Freiburg, which could be of interest as a source of information and information or as evidence. The StAF also has the task of making this information available to the public in compliance with the statutory provisions applicable to the right to information.

The StAF also has the task of preserving the collective documentary heritage of the canton of Friborg, especially by archiving archives of private origin, be it archive material from private individuals, families or companies, from associations, political parties or trade unions.

In addition, the StAF is also a cultural institution whose specific tasks include the reception of researchers as well as a wide range of cooperation with the actors of the cultural scene inside and outside the canton of Friborg. The StAF is active in the fields of culture and science and works v. a. with other archives, museums, libraries, universities, research centers, associations, cultural institutions and other partners.

In 2016, the Freiburg State Archives archived 15.3 kilometers of documents: the archives of the medieval city-state until the end of the Ancien Régime (1798), the documents of the cantonal administration, as well as private archives and collections.
