Gerard Louis Frey (born May 10, 1914 in New Orleans , Louisiana , USA ; † August 16, 2007 in Lafayette , Louisiana) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Lafayette .

Life

Gerard Louis Frey was ordained a priest on April 2, 1938 in his hometown of New Orleans. After various activities in pastoral care and administrative offices, he was in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Savannah , Georgia . He received episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of New Orleans , Philip Hannan , on August 8, 1967. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Alexandria , Charles Pasquale Greco , and the Bishop of Baton Rouge , Robert Emmet Tracy .

Frey was named Bishop of Lafayette on November 7, 1972, and was instituted on January 7 of the following year. On May 13, 1989, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Gerard Louis Frey took care of the extensive reorganization of the Lafayette diocese, but was also held responsible for the scandal surrounding the priest Gilbert Gauthe , who was convicted of child sexual abuse ; the diocese had to offset more than $ 20 million in legal fees.
