Raymond William Lessard

Raymond William Lessard (born December 21, 1930 in Oakwood near Grafton , Walsh County , North Dakota , † January 3, 2016 ) was Bishop of Savannah .

Life

After attending school in Oakwood and a year at the Grand Forks Business School , Raymond William Lessard entered the seminary at Saint Paul in 1949 . From 1953 he continued his studies at the Pontifical North America College in Rome . He received on 16 December in 1956 by the rector of the North American College, Archbishop Martin John O'Connor , the priesthood for the Diocese of Fargo . In 1957 he obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University .

After returning to the United States , he was chaplain at the Cathedral of the Diocese of Fargo for three years. In 1960 he returned to Rome as the personal secretary of Aloisius Cardinal Muench , where he continued his studies in theology and canon law . After Muench's death Lessard worked at the North America College. As an advisor to his home bishop Leo Ferdinand Dworschak , he took part in many sessions of the Second Vatican Council . From 1964 until his appointment as bishop he worked for the Congregation for Bishops .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Savannah on March 5, 1973 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Atlanta , Thomas Andrew Donnellan , on April 27 of the same year; Co-consecrators were Justin Albert Driscoll , Bishop of Fargo, and Francis Joseph Gossman , auxiliary bishop in Baltimore .

On February 7, 1995, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation for health reasons. In his retirement he teaches at the Saint Vincent de Paul regional seminar in Boynton Beach , Florida .

Raymond William Lessard was involved in numerous social projects and the Christians in the Holy Land . In 1992 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Giuseppe Cardinal Caprio and invested in the Lieutenancy USA Southeastern on September 12, 1992 in Naples .
