Francis Joseph Gossman (born April 1, 1930 in Baltimore ; † August 12, 2013 ) was Bishop of Raleigh .

Life

Joseph Gossman attended Saint Charles College in Ellicot City , Maryland , and studied philosophy and theology at Saint Mary's Seminary in Baltimore . After his bachelor's degree in 1952, he studied at the Pontifical North America College in Rome . He was ordained a priest on December 17, 1955 in Rome by Martin John O'Connor , Rector of the North America College, and completed his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1956 with a licentiate in theology (STL). In 1959 he received his doctorate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC .

He served at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore, and in 1968 became Vice Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, faculty at St. Marys Seminary and chaplain of Maryland General Hospital . In 1965 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed papal chamberlain ( monsignor ). In 1968 he became administrator of the Cathedral of Mary the Queen in Baltimore.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 15, 1968 auxiliary bishop in Baltimore and titular bishop of Aguntum . The Archbishop of Baltimore, Lawrence Joseph Cardinal Shehan , donated him episcopal ordination on September 11, 1968 in Mary Queen's Cathedral ; Co- consecrators were Thomas Austin Murphy , Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, and Thomas Joseph Mardaga , Bishop of Wilmington . He was Episcopal Vicar for Baltimore.

On April 8, 1975 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. named fourth Bishop of Raleigh . On June 8, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

Act

Gossman was committed to the African American community in his diocese. In 1963 he took part in Martin Luther King's March on Washington for Work and Freedom . At a diocesan conference called by Gossman, a Black Ministry was founded in 1978 , from which in 1982 the African American Ministry and Evangelization ("AAMEN Office") emerged.

In 1991 he was the initiator of the North Carolina Lutheran-Roman Catholic Covenant , which the dioceses of Raleigh and Charlotte founded with the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America .
