Gilbert Gauthe is an American Roman Catholic priest. He is believed to be the first Catholic priest convicted of child sexual abuse in the United States.

1972 to 1983 Gauthe was a priest in the Lafayette diocese in Louisiana . From 1972 to 1973 he was an assistant pastor in Broussard, Louisiana in a church near a primary school. This was where the first complaints about child molestation arose. When his bishop Gerard Louis Frey found out about the allegations, Gauthe was only warned. This continued his harassment. From 1973 to 1976 he worked in New Iberia (Louisiana) . From 1974 to 1981 Gauthe was used as a chaplain for scouts. Gauthe 1976 was transferred to Abbeville (Louisiana) . In 1977 Gauthe was promoted to pastor of Esther, Louisiana and Henry, Louisiana village churches . In 1983 he was given leave of absence due to illness.

In 1984 Gauthe was charged with the sexual abuse of 27 children. His superiors had known about the allegations for ten years. Gauthe was convicted of abusing 39 children between 1972 and 1983 in 1985. He admitted the abuse of the 39 children and received in return only a sentence of 20 years in prison. Gauthe joined the Wade Correctional Center in Homer, Louisiana in 1986 . He also contacted male teenagers in prison and was punished for doing so. Gauthe was released from prison in 1995 after less than nine years.

Gauthe lived in Ace, Texas after his release . There, in July 1996, he was charged with molesting a three-year-old boy and sentenced to seven years probation. From 1997 Gauthe lived in Shreveport, Louisiana and worked in Shrevenport Prison as a counselor for sex offenders. From December 1997 Gauthe was in Lafayette, Louisiana in the Lafayette Parish Jail in custody. He was charged with rape. He was released from prison in 1999 because the charges were dropped. Gauthe lived in Conroe, Texas and worked in a community center driving a minibus for senior citizens. He was fired when his employer found out about his criminal past. In 2001 he moved to La Marque, Texas, worked as a charter bus driver for cruise ships and school trips, and lived in a motor home on company premises. When he was forced to register as a sex offender, he moved to Galveston, Texas . Gauthe was arrested there in April 1998 because he had not registered as a sex offender within seven days. He was imprisoned until April 20, 2010. Then he lived in San Leon, Texas . In 2017 Gauthe was again registered in La Marque.
